Patty Jenkins says ‘Wonder Woman 3’ is dead — owes Lucasfilm a ‘draft’ of ‘Rogue Squadron’

Looks like Rogue Squadron has been cleared for lift-off … again.

Patty Jenkins, who directed the first two “Wonder Woman” reboots, revealed a potential third installment was “over for the time being, easily forever” in a new interview.

Even more, she owes Disney and Lucasfilm a “draft” of the seemingly canceled “Rogue Squadron.”

“It’s not an easy task, what’s going on with DC,” Jenkins, 52, said during an appearance on HBO Max’s “Talking Pictures Podcast,” referring to the recent overhaul of the DC cinematic universe by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

“James Gunn and Peter Safran have to follow their own heart into their own plans … I have sympathy for what a big job it is,” she continued.

News that there would not be a threequel came in 2022 when Gunn, 57, and Safran, 58, reportedly rejected a script from Jenkins — and then decided to can the entire project.

In an ironic twist of fate, the announcement came days after Gal Gadot, who starred as the Amazonian, posted on X (formerly Twitter) how excited she was to continue playing the heroine.

“I’ve been so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible, iconic character and more than anything I’m grateful for YOU. The fans. Can’t wait to share her next chapter with you,” Gadot, 38, wrote at the time.

Additionally, Gunn caused a Kryptonite-level scandal after choosing to nix Henry Cavill from playing Superman, who has since been replaced by “Hollywood” star David Corenswet.

“I will, after all, not be returning as Superman,” Cavill, 40, posted on Instagram shortly after also announcing he had departed the Netflix show “The Witcher.”

Despite the shakeups, the loss of the project allowed Jenkins to refocus her attention on a galaxy far, far away with the starfighter-based film “Rogue Squadron.”

Disney initially announced the film in December 2020 with a plan to release it around Christmas 2023.

However, due to the rampant COVID-19 pandemic and consistent scheduling conflicts with Jenkins, the film was put on hold.

“When I left ‘Star Wars’ to do ‘Wonder Woman 3,’ and I started working on that, we talked about, ‘Well, maybe I’ll come back to ‘Star Wars’ after ‘Wonder Woman 3’, so we started a deal for that to happen,” Jenkins said during her interview.

“When ‘Wonder Woman 3’ then went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, ‘Oh, we’ve got to finish this deal.’ We finished the deal right as the strike was beginning, so I now owe a draft of ‘Star Wars,'” she continued. “So we will see what happens there. Who knows.”

During the announcement on Disney Investor Day, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said that “Rogue Squadron” was supposed to “introduce a new generation of ‘Star Wars’ pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing high-speed thrill ride.”

The Post reached out to Lucasfilm for comment.

“They have a hard job in front of them of, ‘What’s the first movie they’re going to do?'” Jenkins said, regarding Lucasfilm. “They have other directors who have been working, but I am now back on doing ‘Rogue Squadron.’ We’ll see what happens. We need to get it to where we’re both super happy with it.”

In the Star Wars universe, Rogue Squadron is the group of rebels that Luke Skywalker joined at the end of “A New Hope,” named after the group of people who sacrificed themselves to acquire the Death Star plans in “Rogue One.”

Despite not having the official greenlight for the film, Jenkins would be thrilled to take on the project.

“The emotion of ‘Star Wars’ and what it stands for is something so beautiful in this world,” she said. “If I can do something beautiful and do something that serves that audience, I would love to do it.”
