All About Last Year's Winner

Last year's top dog was a little one-eyed terrier-mix named Hobie that belongs to Christin Bernhardt and her husband Joern Riemer. The coupled adopted Hobie in 2002 from the Laguna Beach Animal Shelter.

Hobie was a street dog from Tijuana, Mexico, where he was found with severe glaucoma, which eventually led to the removal of his left eye.

This sweet little pup beat out 8,000 other furry hopefuls to win the title of 2023's Cutest Rescue Dog.

People Magazine reported, "She and Riemer brought Hobie home soon after, on July 17, 2022. Since then, Hobie — who was a little skittish for the first two weeks after his adoption — has fully acclimated to his new life.

"We have this ritual on the weekend mornings: I have coffee, he crawls up on my lap, and I hold him like a baby," Bernhardt says.

"He could do this for hours," she adds. "He's a very sweet, mild-mannered little boy." Especially when it comes to other animals.

Bernhardt often catches him cuddling with their senior dog Zoe. Along with car rides and trips to the beach, one of Hobie's favorite activities is visiting the pet store to see the adoptable cats."

Here's wishing the best of luck to all this year's contestants!
