Colin Farrell re-ups his extensive facial prosthetics as The Penguin in a new series coming this September to Max - and people are loving it.

It’s director Matt Reeves’ baddie-based spinoff to his 2022 film, The Batman. As you can see in the trailer, it takes place in the days following that film’s conclusion, in a city completely flooded.

“Look at this. What that mad man did,” mutters The Penguin as he drives through the disaster. It’s not clear if he’s talking about Riddler here, who detonated the bombs which caused water to cascade into the city, or Batman. Mistakenly believing it’s the latter could form part of his character arc. After all, he’s one of Batman’s classic enemies, not Riddler’s.

The Penguin story

We’ll see The Penguin rise from gangster to godfather as he attempts to fill the power void left by syndicate overlord Carmine Falcone. There are brooding talks in jails, and tense family meetings around darkened dining tables. It’s basically like if The Sopranos took place in Gotham City.

The Academy Award nominee is unrecognizable as Batman’s nemesis, with nasty scars, thinning hair, and a heavy gut. Watch the trailer below, then see what people are saying about

The Penguin reactions

The reception is strong on Twitter, where people are calling the trailer “peak,” “well-cast,” and “a masterclass.” Farrell might be an Academy Award nominee at the moment, but if he keeps this up he might have to make room on his mantlepiece very soon.
