Dave Grohl was supposed to feature on boygenius' Grammy-nominated the record — but then he fell asleep.

In a new interview with NME, boygenius members Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker spoke about performing their track "Satanist" live with the Foo Fighters frontman at a recent show, revealing that he'd previously overslept and missed a planned recording session with the band.

Before Grohl, 54, joined the band on stage at the Hollywood Bowl on Halloween, he'd previously struck up a friendship with Bridgers, 29, she explained to the outlet.

"I made friends with Dave backstage at a Billie Eilish show. He’s the coolest guy ever. I was texting the boys [Dacus and Baker], being like, ‘I met Dave Grohl, and he exceeds every expectation of how a rock star can be in the world,'" said the "Kyoto" singer. "I think we, as a group, look for that a lot — like, who is living their life the way that we want to get old and live our lives?"

"He’s so game," added Dacus, 28. "I just want to stay game the way that he is."

The musicians recalled asking Grohl to duet "Satanist" at the Hollywood Bowl, which Bridgers described as a "full-circle moment" considering their proposed in-studio collaboration.

"There was this missed connection where Dave was actually going to come to the studio and play on [the record]. Then he slept through it or whatever, and we didn’t end up meeting," said Bridgers. "So it was actually kind of a perfect, full-circle moment of having him play on that song because we knew we wanted the drums to be crazy on that."

For the Halloween performance, Grohl got into the spirit by sporting skeleton face paint, while Dacus, Baker and Bridgers performed in costume as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, respectively.

At the time, Grohl rocked out on the drums, which were elevated on a platform behind the three singer-songwriters at the front of the stage. The former Nirvana drummer's energy seemed to fuel the bandmates, who were shredding on guitars — so much so that Bridgers lost her halo and veil.

Last month, boygenius earned six nominations for the upcoming 2024 Grammy Awards: album of the year and best alternative album for the record, record of the year, best rock song and best rock performance for "Not Strong Enough" as well as best alternative rock performance for "Cool About It." the record also received a nod for best engineered album, non-classical.
