Earlier this year, there was quite a bit of fuss after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were evicted from Frogmore Cottage. Even though they were leasing the Windsor property, King Charles III wanted to move disgraced royal Prince Andrew into the home since he could no longer afford Royal Lodge.

Those best-laid plans never came to fruition because Andrew refused to move, Frogmore is currently vacant, and now, King Charles has another issue at hand. It seems that his decision to leave Harry as a counselor of state is forcing his real estate hand. In the position, which The Times described as “one of seven members of the royal family who can deputize for the monarch if he is abroad or unwell,” Harry must have a U.K. residence. Well, he certainly had one until Charles took it away, even though it was a cherished wedding gift from his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Oh, what a tangled web the royal family weaves. Dr. Craig Prescott, a constitutional law expert, called it “uncharted waters” to the media outlet. “The idea of the second son of the King choosing a life away from royal duties is not something the law has thought about, and I can imagine that Buckingham Palace would be concerned by that,” he remarked. “The King had the chance to remove him with the counselor of state legislation last year but chose not to.” The family feud was already heated, so Charles backed off the suggestion of removing Harry.

Now, the Sussexes might find themselves back at Windsor with a U.K. property or an apartment at Kensington Palace. A pal of Charles said it would be “a pied-à-terre for his son, that seems a reasonable thing to do.” However, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson denied this story saying the “claims are not true” and that they are happy to find “temporary accommodation for Harry on the royal estate” for “short visits.” Yet they couldn’t find room for him at Windsor during his short trip for the WellChild Awards. It’s a curious pickle Charles finds himself in, and it’s an issue he will need to resolve sooner versus later.
