Carole and Michael Middleton, the parents of Princess Kate, have made their first public appearance since the royal announced her cancer diagnosis in March.
The couple was all smiles while attending day two of the Royal Ascot on Wednesday in Berkshire, England. The Middletons coordinated in light blue for the annual horse race, with Carole opting for a pleated floral blue dress from Self-Portrait—the London-based brand that Kate also favors—plus a floral fascinator, gray-blue pumps, and jewelry from Emily Mortimer. As for Michael, the Middleton patriarch wore a classic morning suit with a black coat and gray striped pants, which he paired with a light blue vest, a dark blue spotted tie, and a black top hat.

Throughout the day, the Middletons were seen mingling with other members of the royal family, including Princess Eugenie, Duchess Sophie, and—of course—their son-in-law, Prince William.
In fact, Carole and William seemed to share wide grins as the two chatted with each other. At one instance, William could be seen laughing while lending Carole a hand as she walked on the grass.
Carole and Michael's appearance at the Royal Ascot comes just a few days after Kate made a grand royal comeback at Trooping the Colour. The occasion marked her first public engagement since December, though the appearance doesn't necessarily indicate a full-time return to public duties just yet.
As she explained in a letter released by Kensington Palace last week: “I am not out of the woods yet. I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much-needed time to heal.”
