Growing up, there wasn’t a girl group more important to Renée Rapp than Destiny’s Child. The influence of the trio’s runs and harmonies are subtly woven into the pop singer’s performance style, which was also shaped by the group she spent some time in: the questionably named Daddy’s Little Girls.
“That’s how I think of it much later in my life,” Rapp said during her recent appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show when the host was taken aback by the name. “I’m like, is this not weird? For sure, like absolutely.” Still, Rapp tapped back into her girl group roots for an impromptu performance of the Destiny’s Child classic “Dangerously in Love” with Hudson.

Hudson shared details of her own experience loving Destiny’s Child, though she came into much closer proximity to their influence as she starred alongside Beyoncé in Dreamgirls. But that vision of pop stardom — all glitz, glam, and glorious vocals — has been the guiding force behind Rapp’s career, especially as she’s shifted acting to the backseat in favor of her music. Her debut studio album, Snow Angel, arrived in August.
“I told them, ‘I will only take this job if you promise to help me in my music career one day,” Rapp recently told Rolling Stone, referring to the offer she received as a teenager to play the lead role of Regina George in Mean Girls: The Musical on Broadway. At the time, she told producers Tina Fey and Lorne Michaels: “I want to be a pop star. I do not want to do this forever.”
