Sabrina Carpenter Wore Blue Hydrangeas With Summer 2024’s ‘It’ Shoe

These florals were, in fact, groundbreaking.

The Met Gala 2024 was a florist’s dream come true—the florist, for the sake of this article, is me. I love flowers, but I’m certainly no flower expert, though I do think I have a knack for making Trader Joe’s flowers look like luxe arrangements. That said, blooming gowns graced the Met steps last night, but the florals didn’t end there; at the after party, stars were basically wearing flower fields, too, with Sabrina Carpenter taking a bunch of blue hydrangeas out for an evening stroll. No, she wasn’t carrying them—she was wearing them.

The singer graced the Met carpet in a black velvet gown with a voluminous, baby blue skirt, and while that look—and her sweet moments shared with Barry Keoghan's during their red-carpet debut (!!)—certainly won the night, the true winner is that baby blue mini she slipped into a few hours late. It was itty bitty! It was bold! It was corseted! And it was covered in blue hydrangeas, aka, she was a walking bouquet, if you will.

Mini dress aside—which, by the way, convinced me to actually invest in some florals for spring and summer, but not those average, run-of-the-mill flowers, but rather 3D florals—it was her sky-high, break-your-ankle heels that took the look home. While some might wince at the idea of stepping out in platform heels, Carpenter strutted out of her hotel like a pro, which she obviously is. She’s no stranger to pumps that certainly aren’t for the faint of heart, but while you might not be daring enough to wear her exact shoes of choice, the style is worth noting: Mary Janes.

I’ve waxed poetic about Mary Janes in the past—and more than once, too—but there’s still so much in store for the sweet silhouette that can also lean sexy, as Carpenter proved. Hers obviously feature a sky-high heel, a platform base, and a strappy upper, plus a pointed, piercing toe, but yours don’t have to be quite so daring. And that’s the beauty of the Mary Jane; you can find one that suits you, with more subtle, easygoing detail, aka, a low heel or bold, out-there accents.

What’s more, Mary Janes can be worn to a myriad of occasions, including a Met Gala after party (I’m my dreams!!), dinner parties, brunch with friends, or just a day of shopping around the city. Style them with skirts, dresses, jeans, and more.
