Fans who are accustomed to Sofía Vergara’s smart, comedic roles better get ready for the dark, dramatic turn she’s about to take in Netflix’s Griselda. The limited series, that debuts on Jan. 25, 2024, follows “the savvy and ambitious Colombian businesswoman Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history,” according to their website. Vergara is playing the head honcho, but she’s barely recognizable in the teaser she shared with her Instagram followers — it’s a shocking new look.

One of characters menacingly asks a crowded room, “Who is the one in charge?” As powerful musical plays in the background, Vergara is only seen from behind until the camera snaps onto her intimidating stare. Gone is the 51-year-old actress’ normally sunny demeanor, she looks angry and scary as Blanco. Her normally soft, caramel hair is styled in a shorter textured lob with an auburn hue. The monochromatic makeup transforms her face into something viewers have never witnessed before in Vergara.

She is obviously proud of the project and enthusiastically shared her thoughts with her followers. “Can’t wait to share this project with you! For the last ten years it has been my passion to bring this to you and its almost here! 🤩 January 25. @netflix,” she wrote. Her fans understood the career shift she’s trying to make and praised her for tackling such a challenging character. “Congrats Sofia you really came out of the ‘pretty girl’ shell and move on to an impactful role. I can’t wait to watch your performance,” wrote one account. Another added in the comments, “I don’t think you understand how excited I am for this.”

This is the first time Vergara has been able to talk about the six-episode series about the crime matriarch. The 118-day actors’ strike prevented her from promoting any aspect of the show, but now, she’s able to show those acting chops off again. Blanco was such a powerhouse that she transformed the drug trade in Miami in the 1980s and met her demise in a drive-by shooting in 2012 in Medellín, Colombia.
