The "Here Come the Brides" and "Salem's Lot" star reportedly died "after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family," according to a statement.

Starsky & Hutch actor David Soul, who helped popularize one of the most iconic TV series of the 1970s, has died at age 80.

Soul reportedly died Thursday, according to a notice on his website as well as a statement on social media, which noted that he died "after a valiant battle for life" with his "loving family" around him.

"He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend," the post read. "His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched."

EW has reached out to representatives for Soul for more information.

Born in Chicago in 1943, Soul worked on several notable television projects prior to landing a leading role opposite Paul Michael Glaser as the latter half of the titular police duo in 1975's ABC series Starsky & Hutch. After the program ended in 1979, Soul reprised his character in a cameo near the end of 2004's Starsky & Hutch movie starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, for which he was nominated for an MTV Movie Award in the Best Cameo category.

His first major TV roles were small parts in I Dream of Jeannie and Flipper, followed by a two-season run on the western comedy Here Come the Brides from 1968 to 1970.

Outside of his acting career, Soul released five albums of original music as well as a handful of successful singles, including the 1976 rock hit "Don't Give Up on Us," which reached No. 1 on the charts in the United States.
