Being put “on pause” has become a running joke in the Bravo fandom ever since Real Housewives of New York City star Dorinda Medley kept insisting she was put "on pause" from the series rather than let go. So now when the phrase is used, well, it sounds more like a way of letting us down easy. The latest Bravo entity to be put "on pause?" Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard.

Will it return like a phoenix from the ashes like the glorious Real Housewives of Miami, or will it go the way of other dearly departed shows like Southern Charm New Orleans and Ladies of London? Here’s what we know.

Was Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard canceled?

Two days after the Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard season 2 reunion aired on May 26, 2024, Deadline reported the show would not be going into production for a third season in 2024. According to the report, the show was not outright canceled but was just not green-lit for a new season at the time.

What does the cast think?

Members of the SH:MV cast spoke out after the Deadline report was published. Bria Fleming posted on X (formerly Twitter), "Yes, the rumors are true. Our show, Summer House Martha’s Vineyard, has been put on pause. While it is disappointing to see this happen, we believe it will inspire us to explore new directions in our careers, personal lives, and businesses." She also reposted some posts about the show being paused including ones that pointed out how shows featuring primarily Black casts have been taken off the air by Bravo, including Southern Charm New Orleans and Blood, Sweat & Heels.

Also touching on this topic, Preston Michum wrote as part of his statement on Instagram, "While this news is undoubtedly disappointing because I deeply believe in the equitable investment in Black people and our content, it is one that oddly brings me a bit of peace to reflect, refocus, and reengage on the things I love. This is… see you soon."

Nick Arrington also posted on Instagram. He wrote, "I am sure you’ve heard the news…for now…it’s time to say goodbye. Maybe we’ll be back? Fingers crossed."

Could Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard return? Will there be a season 3?

The show could return, but the soonest it could be on our screens again is still a pretty long time from now.

The first two seasons of the reality show filmed in the late summer (it is called Summer House, after all). It can’t really film in the winter, so with the show not filming in summer 2024, the next time it could shoot would likely be the summer of 2025, which means the new season wouldn’t air until the spring of 2026, if it followed the same schedule as the first two seasons. That’s two years from now! Will Bria still be with flamingo costume-wearing Simon? Will Jasmine be excluded from another Jamaica trip? How will we survive without Preston’s spot-on commentary?

That said, while it could be a while before Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard returns, there *is* a precedent for Bravo bringing back shows. The Real Housewives of Miami was off the air for eight years before it returned in 2021. Another currently airing show, The Real Housewives of Dubai, premiered in 2022 and then was off for two years before returning in June 2024.

It has also become more common recently for Bravo to let shows have a break before production starts back up. This happened with The Real Housewives of New York City, which was totally rebooted, and The Real Housewives of Atlanta also took a hiatus, which Andy Cohen addressed in a June 2024 interview with Reality Checked with Kiki Monique.

"I think Atlanta was a really good example of, we came out of that last season, and we knew, 'Okay, we want to do extensive casting and we want to just give this some time,' and I will say, we gave it time and a lot of people were saying, 'Well, where's Atlanta? What's happening? There hasn't been any announcements,' whatever. I'm so happy with what's going on down in Atlanta right now," Andy said, via People.

So a pause could really just be a pause for Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard. Just like it’s a pause for Family Karma, too… right, Bravo? We need them both back!
