Police have named and charged a suspect in the Oct. 21 homicide of Detroit synagogue leader Samantha Woll.

Michael Manual Jackson-Bolanos, 28, has been charged by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy with "committing a Felony Murder during the perpetration or attempted perpetration of a larceny and/or a first-degree home invasion," Detroit police said in a statement Wednesday.

He was also charged with "One Count of Home Invasion which a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and one count of Lying to a Peace Officer during a 4 year or more crime investigation, a two-year misdemeanor," police said.

The felony murder charge carries a penalty of life in prison without parole, police said. Jackson-Bolanos was arraigned and remanded to jail in 36th District Court on Wednesday.

Police said there are "no facts to suggest that the homicide was a hate crime." The suspect and Woll did not know each other, police added.

After an "exhaustive" investigation, police allege that Jackson-Bolanos "committed a home invasion when he entered [Woll's] house and stabbed her multiple times causing her death," according to Wednesday's statement. Police also allege that the suspect made "false and misleading" statements to investigators.

“This is an extraordinarily sad and tragic case," Worthy said in a statement. "Since October 21st, the date that Samantha Woll was killed, there has been painstaking, diligent, and tireless work done by the Detroit Police Department and my office. Investigations like this take time and we do our best to never rush to judgment."

Woll, 40, was the Board President of the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue. She was found stabbed to death outside her home in Lafayette Park, Michigan, on Oct. 21.

Officers pronounced Woll dead at the scene. Police found her body with multiple stab wounds after a witness reported seeing her unresponsive on the ground and called 911, PEOPLE reported at the time.

In November, police took one person into custody as a person of interest, PEOPLE reported at the time. That person was released two days later.

Earlier this week, Detroit police took a second person of interest into custody.

Detroit Chief James E. White said in October that Woll was returning from a wedding where she was her “normal positive and pleasant self," according to witnesses.

He said police believe she "stumbled" out and "collapsed" outside her home after being stabbed inside, leaving a trail of blood, PEOPLE reported at the time. She was on the street for "quite a while" before being discovered, White added.

Woll was a beloved member of the community who also worked with numerous political figures. She was "a ray of sunshine" and was "always present in all the right ways," her family wrote in an obituary following her killing.

The Detroit Free Press reported at the time that Woll worked for Rep. Elissa Slotkin, as well as Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on her reelection campaign before she began serving on the board of the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue.

"Sam was as kind a person as I’ve ever known," Nessel, 54, said in a post on X at the time. "She was driven by her sincere love of her community, state and country. Sam truly used her faith and activism to create a better place for everyone.”
