SHEBOYGAN – Stephen Colbert made another mention of Sheboygan in an opening monologue June 17.

Several jokes on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" focused on former President Donald Trump's campaign visit to Detroit over the weekend, his 78th birthday and a controversial comment he made about Milwaukee.

Punchbowl News, an online political news daily, first reported last week Trump said Milwaukee, set to host the Republican National Convention in July, was a "horrible city."

Trump denied making the comment in a post on Truth Social.

The context around the comment is debated among Republicans, who said they were in the meeting with Trump, some saying he didn't say it and others saying it was about the broader challenges in the country, election integrity and crime rates.

Colbert cautioned Trump in dissing Milwaukee.

“This man is about to be in a world of deep-fried hurt,” Colbert said. “I know from personal experience you do not mess with Milwaukee.”

“In 2020, you remember this, the Democratic Convention was there. I made a few innocent jokes about it, and four years later, I’m still legally barred from buying bratwursts,” he joked.

“Milwaukeeans were so angry, that to make amends I flew there for a formal apology tour," Colbert continued. “I participated in the Brewers' famed sausage race, where I lost to a 6-year-old girl. And then I apologized to a stadium full of 40,000 people, who I’m pretty sure did not accept the apology.

“I learned my lesson the hard way and have since learned to appreciate Milwaukee, the eternal city,” he said. “The Paris of Wisconsin. Suck it, Sheboygan.”

Colbert made another mention of Sheboygan in an October 2023 monologue, digging at President Joe Biden’s attempt to create hometown comradery at a Philadelphia campaign visit, though his hometown of Scranton is about two hours away. Colbert mirrored the example with Sheboygan and Milwaukee.
