Suicide Squad’s David Ayer is a fan of James Gunn.

Replying to a debate among Twitter users over whether the director’s cut of 2016’s Suicide Squad will ever be publicly released, Ayer chimed in to say that he has nothing but admiration for Gunn and his decision to helm DC Studios alongside Peter Safran.

“I absolutely can’t wait to see Gunn’s Superman,” Ayer tweeted. “I have to say this. Gunn is the bravest man in Hollywood these days. He’s taking charge of the hardest ship to Captain in this industry. We make movies. We are entertainers. Not elected officials leading a nation. Everyone please chill.”

Following the release of 2016’s Suicide Squad, some DC fans have started a #ReleaseTheAyerCut campaign in an effort to get Warner Bros. to release Ayer’s final vision of the DCEU movie.

In August 2023, Ayer tweeted, “All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being show seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have it’s time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects.”

James Gunn and Peter Safran are creating a new DC shared universe

In 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery hired Gunn and Safran as co-CEOs and co-chairmen for DC Studios. They are now launching a brand-new DCU which begins in 2024 with an animated Creature Commandos series. Then, in 2025, Gunn is releasing a new Superman movie, Superman: Legacy, starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, and more.

Ayer, meanwhile, is getting ready to release a new Jason Statham-starring movie next year. Hitting United States theaters on January 12, 2024, The Beekeeper also stars Josh Hutcherson, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad, and Jeremy Irons.
