Toddler Found Dead in Mom’s Arms After Tennessee Tornado Flipped Mobile Home, Neighbor Says

At least six people were killed after multiple twisters touched down in Tennessee on Saturday

A mother was found dead with her toddler in her arms following Saturday’s deadly tornado outbreak in Tennessee.

At least six people were killed after multiple twisters touched down, officials across the state have confirmed. Among the victims are the mother and her toddler who were found together by other residents after the tornado tossed one mobile home on top of another in Madison, a neighbor told CBS affiliate WTVF and CNN.

Authorities have identified them as 31-year-old Floridema Gabriel Perez and 2-year-old Anthony Elmer Mendez, according to CNN and The Tennessean.

Per the outlets, a man inside the second mobile home, identified by police as 37-year-old Joseph Dalton, also died.

The Metro Nashville Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Wanda McClemor, who lives near the trailer off of Nesbitt Lane, told WTVF that neighbors found the mother clutching her child while searching through the wreckage for survivors.

“I prayed they would just be unconscious,” she said. "But that wasn't the case."

Two children, one inside each mobile home, survived the deadly twister, according to The Tennessean. Both kids, who were identified by the outlet as Perez’s 7-year-old son and Dalton’s 10-year-old son, were transported to Vanderbilt Pediatrics with non-life threatening injuries.

The National Weather Service has categorized the twister that hit Madison as an EF-2, “with winds up to 125 mph.” The agency said the most damage was found “off of East Campbell Road as well as Nesbitt Lane.”

The tornado also damaged “multiple single family homes and a church off of East Campbell Road” in Madison, with some buildings “missing large sections of their roofs” and “some exterior walls collapsed,” the NWS said in its statement.

Per the NWS, an apartment complex off Palmer Avenue and an industrial complex off of Myatt Drive were damaged before the tornado traveled to Hendersonville, where numerous businesses were hit on Main Street.

ABC affiliate WKRN reported that 10-year-old Arlan Burnham is among those found dead after his family's home collapsed in Clarksville, where the second tornado hit and killed two others. That twister was an EF-3, according to the NWS.

Both United Way of Greater Nashville and Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee have activated their emergency relief funds in wake of the deadly weather event, the latter confirmed in a press release.
