Trixie Mattel Says Relationship with Her Partner Was Put to the Test on “Trixie Motel: Drag Me Home” (Exclusive)

The 'RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars' winner is renovating her first home with partner David Silver on an all-new season of the Max original series

Drag queen superstar Trixie Mattel is back on TV, this time renovating her home for an all-new season of Trixie Motel.

Dubbed Drag Me Home, the Max original series sees Mattel and her partner, David Silver, deciding to invest in their first place together — and move into the same space for the first time in their seven-year relationship.

For both of them, it was not only a financial commitment, but an emotional one. "It was long and difficult and made both of our patience, like, so slim," she tells PEOPLE. "In the series, we kind of are living on top of each other while we're renovating. It was really hard. I mean, people get divorces over bathroom wallpaper."

Spoiler alert: Mattel and Silver are still together after turning their old Hollywood craftsman into the perfect dream house decked out in stunningly colorful and eccentric design choices perfect for the RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars winner and musician.

And with the help of famous friends, including Nicole Byer, Katya Zamolodchikova, Orville Peck, Christine Quinn, Lisa Vanderpump, and Property Brothers' Drew and Jonathan Scott, they were able to channel a Hollywood Regency style and "do really fantastic bold colors and textures and, like, golds and animal prints" throughout the property," she says.

Silver being on the series was not intentional, at least not in the beginning, when he and Mattel were updating their aging Palm Springs motel into a pink playhouse with custom-themed rooms in season 1.

"David never wanted to be on TV or anything. When the show started, David was the executive producer," Mattel says. "But then he would organically be in the scenes, like, picking out wallpaper or, like, trying out paint samples. And then it was like, 'Well, he's really just in it.' "

"With this project, it wouldn't make any sense to renovate the house and have the other person who's gonna live here not involved," she continues, noting, "Storytelling-wise, it didn't make sense. So he's definitely in it."

It wasn't just Silver who didn't intend to be on TV. Mattel tells PEOPLE that she purposely has kept their relationship private over the years.

"The intimate insides of our relationship is something I never really shared. Other than writing some songs about him, I didn't really show him to people," she says. "And I kept it kind of private because I always sort of felt like, as a public person, my partner shouldn't have to be subjected to being a public person."

Yet, the decision to share their relationship — both as renovators and as a couple — paid off, with audiences getting to see their dynamic play out, especially during the decision-making process.

"You can see in this series that sometimes we have different ideas of what we want in the house," Mattel acknowledges, while noting that Silver is "like an accidental reality star now."

Trixie Motel: Drag Me Home premieres Saturday, June 1 only on Max, with new episodes debuting weekly through June 22.
