A wager on who bakes the best red velvet cake helps spin this reunion out of control

ST. JOSEPH — “The Red Velvet Cake War” opens March 1 and continues through March 17 at Twin City Players, 600 W. Glenlord Road.

In this Southern-fried comedy written by Jones Hope Wooten, three of the Verdeen cousins could not have picked a worse time to throw their family reunion.

As a parade of wildly eccentric Verdeens gather on the hottest day of July, smackdab in the middle of Texas tornado season, things spin out of control and a jaw-dropping high-stakes wager is made on who bakes the best red velvet cake.

Opening night features complimentary wine from Lighthouse Wine Shop.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays.

Tickets are $17-$12.
