NEW YORK — A cavalcade of hip-hop superstars from the past and present will unite to celebrate the genre’s 50th anniversary on Friday with a landmark concert where it originated: The Bronx.

Many credit DJ Kool Herc with introducing hip-hop at a back-to-school party his sister Cindy Campbell organized in their building’s community room at 1520 Sedgwick Ave.

The event

On Aug. 11 — the day recognized as the beginning of hip-hop in 1973 — Yankee Stadium will host the “Hip Hop 50 Live″ extravaganza, promising performances by a range of artists from rap pioneers Roxanne Shante, Run D.M.C. and Ice Cube to trailblazers such as Lil Wayne, Trina and Wiz Khalifa.

How to watch

Produced by Mass Appeal — an entertainment company co-owned by Grammy-winning hip-hop artist Nas — the eagerly anticipated, milestone event will be exclusively livestreamed via Mass Appeal’s YouTube channel beginning at 6 p.m. EST/3 p.m. PST on Aug. 11.

The performers

The diverse lineup of performers include artists from all corners of the nation, including West Coast kingpin Snoop Dogg, Chicago’s resident Grammy, Emmy and Oscar-winning lyricist Common, and T.I., hailing from The Dirty South.

Naturally, Nas (representing Queensbridge) will perform on the mainstage. The Bronx’s very own Remy Ma and Fat Joe will join new-school sensation A Boogie wit da Hoodie and Kid Capri for a “Bronx Bombers” set.

DJ Kool Herc and sister Cindy will take part in a “Pillars of Hip Hop” set alongside other OGs Grandmaster Caz, Kurtis Blow, Melle Mel, Roxanne Shante, Scorpio and The Sugar Hill Gang.

A “Queens of Hip Hop” set will feature Lil Kim, Eve, Remy Ma, Trina and more, while a “Legendary DJ” set will host Clark Kent, Marley Marl, Mannie Fresh and Battlecat spinning on the wheels of steel.

Emmy Award winner Adam Blackstoneserves as managing creative music director, along with partner, producer/keyboardist Omar Edwards.
