How A Woman Who Survived Domestic Violence Can Learn To Be A Mom Again

Kaitlyn claims that she was physically abused by her ex-husband during their marriage. The young mom admits, at first, she defended him and lied about the abuse – including to Dr. Phil during an appearance three years ago — because she was “afraid of him.”

Kaitlyn’s mom, Karen, says that Kaitlyn eventually admitted that she was abused. “She said to me the other day, ‘I’m a lost soul and I don’t know how to get better,’” Karen says. “She’s mentally broken.”

“What do you think is your biggest obstacle right now, mentally, emotionally, to being a parent?” Dr. Phil asks Kaitlyn on Monday’s episode.

“Always having flashbacks and, I guess, PTSD,” the mom of two says. “I just feel like I’m just a bad, bad mom.”

Robin McGraw, whose foundation When Georgia Smiled: The Robin McGraw Revelation Foundation and Dr. Phil Foundation supports men, women and children who have survived domestic violence, describes one of the main obstacles victims of domestic violence face.

“The number one, I believe, hurdle that they have to get over, is to stop blaming themselves and telling themselves that it’s their fault,” Robin says.
