Yep, That ‘Crocodile Dundee’ Sequel Was Really Just an Australia Tourism Promotion

For the last couple weeks, Danny McBride has been teasing a reboot of the hit Australian film “Crocodile Dundee.” Instead, it turns out to be a giant hoax for a Super Bowl ad by Australia’s tourism board.

The ad started like a usual trailer, with McBride playing Mick Dundee’s long lost son, Brian Dundee, and Chris Hemsworth playing his sidekick, Wally Jr.

But by the end, it turns out that it’s not a movie, and all the scenes in the various teasers dropped over the last week are just an excuse to show off Australia’s attractions. But, to satisfy “Dundee” fans, the original Dundee, Paul Hogan, got a cameo at the end of the commercial.

While the movie “Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home” isn’t really going to happen, that commercial and hoax campaign got a budget equal to a mid-level Hollywood production.

Tourism Australia says the entire project had a $27 million budget, with a full promotional campaign to make viewers actually think a trailer was going to be aired.
