IF YOU'RE trying to gain muscle, your first instinct may be to head to the gym and hit the weight rack. And while lifting will never go out of style (in our humble opinion), we're here to tell you that's not the only way to build strength. If you're short on gear—or even just want to shake things up—it's time to add one of the best resistance bands to your training arsenal.

The best exercise bands are affordable, compact and easy to use on the go, and above all, they're one of the most versatile strength accessories in the game. Adding a resistance band into your routine can be as simple as integrating it into your bodyweight warm up, or looping it onto a kettlebell to add a little extra heat to a set of swings.

"Because of the elastic properties, resistance bands recruit muscle fibers differently than free weights," explains Juan Guadarrama, C.S.C.S., one of the creators of Men’s Health’s 7-Minute Workouts for Fat Burn.

Of course, there are tons of different types of resistance bands (and resistance band exercises) out there, from closed loop bands, thick latex bands, bands with handles, and ones that use anchors to attach to your door. Depending on the thickness, they also provide different levels of resistance, meaning that not every band workout is for light weights.

We've spent years testing dozens of the best exercise bands of every nearly type and thickness. Men's Health fitness editors, in collaboration with Men's Health Strength in Diversity initiative members Guadarrama and Eric Sung, C.S.C.S., a trainer at Performance Lab in New York City, have compared testing notes on the best resistance bands we've tried to break down what factors set the best apart from the rest. Throughout our meticulous testing process, we've carefully considered all the essentials: thickness and size, durability, resistance, and value. Our collective efforts have resulted in invaluable insights into performance, durability, and ensuring that we recommend only the very best exercise bands to our readers.

Bandit Kit

TRX takes its iconic resistance bands to the next level with the Bandit Kit, which features ergonomic handles that won't slip or pinch your palms. We put these handles were put to the test, and they truly deliver, offering great control for precise movements. Plus, the handles can be attached to the included TRX strength bands (two 5-15 lb. bands and two 15-30 lb. bands) for customizable resistance of up to 90 pounds.

If you already have resistance bands, you're in luck, because these handles can be purchased separately and used with any band. Made from durable rubber, we love that these bands are slightly thinner, making them ideal for targeted exercises rather than assisted pull-ups or compound movements. Rest assured, they come with a solid 1-year warranty.

What do buyers say? "I’ve been using strength bands for some time but the Bandit handles raise the use of them to a new level of effectiveness for me. Exercises I use to shy away from (like the military press) because I didn’t like the irregularity of how bands fit in my hands are now a mainstay," said one reviewer on the TRX Training site.

Original Gorilla Bow

This rig gives you a little more than just the bands. We put this setup to the test, and found it to be super fun and intuitive to use. You can think of the Gorilla Bow as a hybrid tool that combines the benefits of resistance bands with a bow-style bar, which allows for a lot more versatility than a resistance band alone.

The unique bow design accommodates up to 300 pounds of resistance (just to start, you can get heavier models) that you can use to target just about every muscle group. The bow itself is made out of aircraft aluminum while the resistance bands are double-wall latex, resulting in a durable, lightweight, and portable build.

Resistance is adjustable, with the bow supporting up to 4 bands at a time so you can customize your resistance to meet your needs. The set comes with one original 56" bow, four Gorilla Bands (10, 20, 30 and 50-lb.), a band wrap, and a 30-day all-access membership to Gorilla Bow's virtual training platform. It's pricey, yes. But it packs a lot more usability than your average standalone resistance band.

What do buyers say? Out of more than 1,700 Amazon reviews, 86% recommend the Original Gorilla Bow with at least a 4-star rating.

We found the handles comfortable, featuring a protective sleeve and grommet reinforcement which helps to ensure a solid grip.

While they excel in mobility work, don't expect crazy heavy resistance. They come in five resistance levels, from 'very light' to 'very heavy', ranging from 3-27 pounds. The various levels also differ in length, ranging from the 44" very light cord to the very heavy 53" cord, so you can pick the size and tension right for you.

Mini Band Resistance Loop Exercise Bands

An Amazon bestseller, customers love Perform Better's Mini Band Resistance Loop Exercise Bands for their compact design and versatility. Unlike many comparable rubber closed-loop mini resistance bands, these pack a ton of durability for their small size, with users saying this set holds up after years of use.

Measuring just 9 x 2-inches, they can be used and taken anywhere. When folded up, all four bands can even fit in a single pocket. But because of their small circumference, they're best utilized for dynamic warmups, core exercises, and to target accessory muscles. This set comes with four different resistance levels: light, medium, heavy, and extra heavy. We love that you get an exercise manual included, too.

What do buyers say? Out of more than 3,200 Amazon reviews, 89% recommend the Mini Band Resistance Loop Exercise Bands with at least a 4-star rating.

Monster Bands (Pull-Up Package)

We've put the Rogue Fitness Monster Bands to the test for band-assisted pull-ups, kettlebell variations, and more—trust us when we tell you they don't disappoint. Yeah, they come with a higher price tag, but they're worth every penny.

Made from heavy-duty latex rubber, these bands are built outlast comparable products you might be able to get at a cheaper price. You can get them in up to eight different resistance levels—from 15 to 200 pounds—making them one of the heaviest band options on the market.

We love the lighter bands for mobility work, while heavier bands work well to assist pull-ups or up the ante on deadlifts. Plus, they're 41-inches in circumference, making them ultra versatile.

What do buyers say? "Quality and usability, I have two I use for pull up assist and the rest my wife uses for lots of movements," said one reviewer on the Rogue Fitness site.

Heavy Duty Resistance Stretch Loop Bands

These tough, reliable closed-loop bands are available in six different resistance levels and work well for a variety of exercises. Whether you’re using them to assist you in pull-ups or to warm up larger muscle groups, the 41" circumference allows for a lot of versatility compared to small closed-loop bands. We really like the lighter bands for mobility work, too.

They range from light to heavy resistance (2-200 lb.), and can be purchased alone or in sets of three different resistances. These come at a much lower price point compared to other commercial-grade, looped bands on the market. With any purchase of DRAPER'S STRENGTH Heavy Duty Resistance Stretch Loop Bands, you'll get a lifetime warranty and emailed exercise e-guide, too.

What do buyers say? Out of more than 5,800 Amazon reviews, 91% recommend the Heavy Duty Resistance Stretch Loop Bands with at least a 4-star rating.

Resistance Bands Set

Another Amazon best-seller to make this list. With most bands on the market made of rubber or latex, the CFX Resistance Bands Set stands out from the rest. Designed to help with your muscles in your hips and legs, this resistance loop is made out of specialized fabric for a more comfortable experience than your standard band. Unlike rubber and latex bands, these won't roll, pinch the skin, or tug on body hair, even during your most active sessions.

They come in six different resistance levels, sold in two separate three-packs. We really like the smaller circumference, strong design of these bands for activating large muscles like the glutes and hamstrings while standing or in a quadruped position. You won't have to worry about these fabric bands snapping or tearing on you over time, but some reviewers mention they will eventually stretch out and lose some elasticity. But for a three-pack at less than $20, the value is definitely well worth it.

What do buyers say? Out of more than 6,700 Amazon reviews, 94% recommend the Heavy Duty Resistance Stretch Loop Bands with at least a 4-star rating.

Resistance Band (Heavy)

You may not be as inclined to shop for a single resistance band compared to a set, but leave it to the Swoosh to change your mind. This bungee-style band from Nike is constructed with a fabric sleeve over top of the rubber elastic band, which protects your skin and body hair from uncomfortable pinching. The durable design means it's built to last, too, so you won't need to worry about it snapping on you after a few uses.

The integrated, ergonomic double handle allows you to choose which grip is best for you to maximize comfort and control during any movement. This heavy band can withstand 40 pounds of resistance and stretch to 4 times it's length, too.

What do buyers say? "Very strong and durable band, used for replacement cable machines," said one reviewer on the Nike site.

What to Consider When Choosing a Resistance Band

When it comes to choosing the right resistance band for you, there is a lot to consider. Resistance bands come in a wide range of prices, so it's important to first consider your budget and how often you will use the band. Next, consider what kind of exercises you want to utilize a band for (mobility, general strength, rehabilitation, assisted pull-ups, etc.). As you shop for a resistance band, here are some other factors you should consider:

Tension range: Resistance bands come in a wide range of levels of resistance. Some brands specify tension from light to heavy, while some utilize resistance ranges by pounds. It's important to choose a band with the right resistance level for your fitness level and the specific exercises you'll be doing. When in doubt, always go a bit lighter on the resistance band. You can always move farther from the origin point to create more tension with a lighter band.

Material: Resistance bands are made from different materials such as latex, rubber, and fabric. Some materials lend themselves better to comfort during use, while some are better-suited for mobility or rehabilitation, etc. Consider the material and quality of the band to ensure that it's durable enough for its intended use.

Length and size: The length and size of the band can affect the range of motion and level of resistance. Choose a band that is long enough to perform the exercises you want to do and the right size for your body.

Included accessories: Some resistance bands come with handles, grips, door anchors, or other accessories. Some of these add-ons can make exercises more comfortable and provide a better grip on the band, allowing for more control and specificity during a given movement. Others increase the versatility of a band by facilitating you to perform a wider range of exercises. Consider what types of movements you want to utilize your resistance band for to determine what accessories appeal to you.

Brand and reviews: Consider the brand and read reviews from other customers to ensure that the band you're considering is of good quality and has a good reputation.

How Resistance Bands Help Build Strength

Similar to free weights, resistance bands help create tension and place stress on the muscles, explains Sung.

However, resistance bands assist in efforts to build muscle and strength in a few unique ways.

Because they deliver more resistance as you stretch them further, they offer a different challenge than free weights. This means your muscles face the most load and tension at the top of every exercise. For example, the top of a resistance band pushup is a challenge; the top of a bodyweight pushup is a position of rest.

Another way resistance bands help build strength is by assisting in movements that an individual cannot yet complete at baseline standards, explains Guadarrama.

"It allows athletes to move through the full range of motion and acquire neuromuscular capacity," he explains. "Over time the body can adapt, learn the movement, and build the strength needed for the unassisted effort."

Bands can also be attached to plates and kettlebells to add more resistance to the eccentric or concentric phases of a given movement, explains Guadarraama.

For some movements, resistance bands also increase the time-under-tension that your muscles face.

"Each of these methods has benefits to biomechanical advantages and providing variance in stress."

Best Resistance Band Exercises

The best use of resistance bands is in complex movements like squats, bench presses, and deadlift, according to Guadarrama.

"The principles of accommodating resistance where there is major weight change causes the most muscular adaption," he explains. "This means that depending on where the band is attached (bottom or top), the body is stressed in ways that elicit change in the muscles and the central nervous system."

Sung, on the other hand, enjoys incorporating bands for shoulder warm-ups and to make squat jumps just a little bit spicier.

"The banded rear delt fly is great exercise to do as a warm up to prepare your body before an upper body session," says Sung. "Grab the band, hold it out in front of you, stretch it across your upper chest and try to resist the band as much and slowly as you can."

If you're looking to get started in training lower body plyometrics, put band-assisted squat jumps on your radar. "Tie a band to a high anchor, grab each end of it, assume your squat stance, and focus on jumping as high as you can with the assistance of the band. This is a great entry point."
