190 Bottles of a Single-Barrel, 32-Year-Old Macallan Will Be Up for Grabs

The Macallan is a name that is no stranger to hefty pricetags—as we reported recently, a bottle of 1926 Macallan just set a record at Sotheby’s London by hammering down for nearly $3 million. The good news is that not every bottle of Macallan is quite that expensive, and starting next week you can bid on a 1991 vintage single malt from Caskshare with an asking price of just over $4,000.

Caskshare was founded in 2019 with the goal of linking whisky fans to rare single cask expressions by allowing consumers to purchase shares of casks while they mature, with bottles made available once they are properly aged. The company also has its Collective Series of rare whiskies, and this is the first release to be available from the U.S. arm of Caskshare. This single cask of Macallan was distilled in 1991, a 32-year-old single malt initially aged in a first-fill bourbon barrel and finished in a Pedro Ximenez sherry cask (unlike most Macallan that is fully sherry cask-matured). It will be bottled in January of 2024 at 49 percent ABV. Just 190 bottles will be available globally via ballot from December 7 to 14 for $4,250—a pretty good price considering how much older Macallan whisky can go for these days.
The artwork on the label for this release was inspired by a mural created by American artist Tristan Eaton. “Just as we curate distinctive whiskies, we also curate collaborations with artists for the bottle design,” said Caskshare managing director John Robertson in a statement. “Drawing inspiration from two of Eaton’s evocative murals paying homage to Alexander Graham Bell–the Scottish-born inventor of the telephone and of the American Telecoms Company–we felt that this was the perfect partner to beautifully showcase the intricate interplay between Scottish innovation and American artistic ingenuity as we launch the Collective Series here in the U.S.”
You can enter the ballot on the Caskshare website—according to the company, members will get first crack at the 190 bottles, and any they don’t claim will be allocated randomly to people who submitted ballots. Caskshare will ship out the Macallan in March of next year.
