Whether making small upgrades to a bedroom, redoing it entirely, or building a new home from scratch, a new bed frame can entirely transform your space.

Purchasing a bed frame can be more intimidating than hitting "checkout" on other home goods. Unlike swapping seasonal flannel for cooling sheets or purchasing a quality comforter (or even décor items), shipping and assembling bedroom furniture can be such a hassle that you only want to do it once.

We did the hard work for you, testing a variety of bed frames across styles, price points, and functionalities. (I even personally assembled two bed frames before writing this article.)

We looked for high-quality bed frames that were easy to put together and durable for years to come, and we took into account personal design preferences as well as which splurges were "worth it" in the end.

No matter your style or budget, here are 16 bed frames that will elevate your space.

Best Overall: Nest Bedding HomeBase Foundation

$599 at Nestbedding.com

Star Qualities

  • This was easy to assemble with minimal screws.

  • This frame had an elegant and modern design complete with USB ports.

  • The quality is good for being on the lower end of the price range.

Red Flags

  • There is limited storage under the bed, which is a "con" for some.

It’s hard to go wrong with this classic upholstered bed frame, which has a perfect balance of modern and traditional design features. The design is simple and clean, but the wood legs give it a classic feel while adding some warmth to the design.

Complete with USB ports and easy assembly, this bed is a good option for anyone who isn’t quite sure what to choose. In 10 or 20 years, it’ll look just as good in a room as it does now. After six-plus months of use, PEOPLE testers could not tell a visible difference in the quality of the frame. Our tester also noted the frame holds up impressively to lots of tossing and turning, including a partner and dog.

What’s more, Nest Bedding manufactures this bed frame on-demand with woodworking experts in Arizona to ensure the highest standards and reduce product waste.

Materials: Pinewood, polyester | Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king | Colors: Sand, stone gray

Experts Say

“The bed is the main focal point in the bedroom so the frame will definitely set the tone for the entire room,” West Coast interior designer Janette Mallory explains. “The most important factor when deciding on bed frames — if it's for the main bedroom — is what the client wants. I usually discuss with them at length their personal preference and this can be anything that ranges from traditional to contemporary.”

Best Budget: Diiyiv Metal Platform Bed Frame

$80 at Amazon.com

Star Qualities

  • The minimalist style is timeless and can go with any design.

  • The height makes it easy to get in and out of bed with ease.

  • There is enough room under the frame for under-bed storage

Red Flags

  • This fits mattress sizes exactly, so may be a tight fit for a more plush mattress.

This metal platform bed is nothing fancy, but a great choice for anyone shopping on a budget. Add a nice mattress, some stylish linens, and a gorgeous bed skirt to this setup and you can easily make it look more expensive. While we didn't test this one firsthand, reviewers rave about how durable it is.

Just be sure to size up one if you have a more plush mattress, since there’s not much wiggle room on the dimensions. Overall, you can’t beat the under-$100 price tag on this bed frame.

Material: Alloy steel | Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king | Colors: Black

Best Rattan: Silk & Snow Wooden Bed Frame

See at Silkandsnow.com

Star Qualities

  • This rattan frame was relatively easy and intuitive to put together.

  • We could immediately tell that this is high quality and will last for years to come.

  • The headboard makes such a statement, we didn't need to add a lot more to the room to achieve an earthy, coastal look.

Red Flags

  • It's on the pricier side, but we think it's a great investment piece.

Editor's Note: We previously awarded our Best Rattan pick to Pottery Barn's Sausalito Cane Bed, but after six months of testing at home, our tester reported that the cane headboard kept pulling her hair and catching on her silk pillowcase, so we have replaced it with a this newly tested pick from Silk and Snow.

Silk and Snow recently released a rattan version of its direct-to-consumer favorite bed frame, and one of our editors tested it immediately.

Shipped quickly and delivered straight to your door, this solid rubberwood frame uses Japanese joinery to easily slot together its components. We put this bohemian pick together in roughly forty minutes — and admired its coastal elegance for approximately forty minutes more before styling the linens. While we’ve assembled a Silk and Snow frame alone and with company, we’d highly recommend the latter because you’ll need to balance certain pieces at the same time during assembly.

Better yet, this Wooden Bed Frame is sustainably sourced to boot. Multiple headboard options would also be easy to switch out for customization over time, but the rattan option is frankly stunning.

Material: Natural cane rattan, solid rubberwood | Sizes: Twin, full, queen, king | Colors: One

Best Platform: Pottery Barn Jake Upholstered Storage Platform Bed with Metal Legs

$2299 at Potterybarn.com

Star Qualities

  • The frame and upholstery are sturdy and well-made.

  • The upholstery is soft, and we like the range of customizable options available.

  • Spacious, well-crafted drawers provide ample room for storage.

Red Flags

  • If you have a nightstand, the drawers may be difficult to access.

  • The frame is heavy, making it difficult to reposition if you need to move it.

Forget whatever you think you know about bed frames with storage, because this piece of furniture is not what you remember from your dorm room days. With gorgeous customizable upholstery and impeccable design, this storage bed is a luxurious choice for those in a never-ending search for more drawer and closet space. Complete with a white-glove service that makes assembly quick and easy, this bed is a perfect way to make a statement in your bedroom.

We loved how durable and sturdy this felt, but that was what also made it quite heavy. That’s why we recommend knowing exactly where you’ll want to position it during assembly so you won’t have to reposition it later; we noted that months into use, the bed frame will not budge (for better or for worse.)

Similarly, upkeep over time is relatively easy; the fabric doesn’t seem to collect dust the way other upholstery does, but we’ve run a vacuum over it a few times for maintenance just in case.

Material: Basketweave, boucle, velvet, or plain weave | Sizes: Full, queen, king, California king | Colors: 29 options

Most Sleek: Saatva Santorini Bed Frame

$1595 at Saatva.com

Star Qualities

  • We found the fabric easy to clean.

  • The construction was durable enough to withstand frequent vacuuming.

  • There was no wobbling or movement while on the bed.

Red Flags

  • The assembly instructions weren’t clear.

  • The legs come in one color.

The aptly named Santorini frame by Saatva may look just as sophisticated and luxe as an island vacation, but what we love about this bed is how functional and durable it is. This is also a great choice for those who share a home with pets since the fabric is ultra-easy to clean and durable enough to maintain its sophisticated look even after frequent vacuuming.

We love the four sleek upholstery options, though it would be nice if we could customize the leg color along with it. If you’re not used to assembling furniture, just be sure to hire a professional (or extremely kind friend) to help you out. Luckily, its quality remains so durable over time that we ideally won’t have to move or adjust it for years to come.

Material: Kiln-dried hardwood | Sizes: Queen, king, California king | Colors: Taupe vintage velvet, graphite vintage velvet, natural linen, pewter linen

Easiest to Assemble: Thuma The Bed

See at Thuma.co

Star Qualities

  • We love the ability to customize the frame and headboard color as well as the fabric.

  • There is an option of a standard headboard or PillowBoard with added cushioning.

  • The assembly didn’t require any tools.

Red Flags

  • During long-term testing, we found that the headboard moved around a bit.

While you may see that this easily assembled bed frame requires no tools and think that means it must not be sturdy, know that our tester loves this brand so much that she owns two of them in different sizes. Over long-term testing, we did note that the headboard moved around frequently because there’s no attachment option, so may not be best for restless sleepers who might find this bothersome.

Easily customizable, you’ll be able to pick from four wood colors, two headboard types, four headboard colors, and two fabric options. All of that, and it took us just 20 minutes to assemble on our own. We love that there’s room for storage underneath the bed, too.

Material: Chunky boucle, oak wood | Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king | Colors: Walnut, natural, espresso, gray

Best Bouclé: Silk & Snow Bouclé Bed Frame

See at Silkandsnow.com

Star Qualities

  • The bouclé fabric headboard is washable.

  • The design is stylish and trendy.

  • We found the slats to be particularly durable, making this a good option for a heavier mattress.

Red Flags

  • Assembly was difficult and best done with multiple people or a professional.

If you’re looking for a bed that will make a statement in a modern or eclectic space while also providing comfort, this bouclé option is for you. While it might not be the easiest to assemble, it’s extremely durable with ultra-sturdy slats that can hold a thicker mattress if you have one.

Though it’s a fairly steep price point, the durability is bound to make it last long, and we love that the easy zippered headboard fabric is machine washable. Sure, you can get this with or without the headboard, but why would you opt to go without the most stylish part of it?

Material: Acacia wood, bouclé | Sizes: Twin, full, queen, king | Colors: Ivory

Coziest: Casper Haven Upholstered Bed Frame

See at Casper.com

Star Qualities

  • The headboard features superior fabric along with a comfortable and stylish design.

  • The solid construction is ultra-durable.

  • The design prevents dust, lint, or pet hair from collecting.

Red Flags

  • The trendy design and quality make this one of the more expensive options on our list.

This bed strikes an appealing balance between modern design and a warm, cozy feel thanks to its premium felted wool upholstery. It has clean and smooth curved lines with just enough texture to keep the design interesting. Available in three neutral colors, the Casper Haven Upholstered Bed Frame is a classic that can be used in almost any interior. Those of you who love to lounge, read, or even work from bed will love that the soft headboard has been expertly designed with cushioning and a slat to optimize comfort.

A fun bonus? We tested this with pets and loved that this design didn’t leave room for hair to collect. Yes, it’s pricey, but we could feel an impressive difference in quality while using this over time versus other options.

Material: Wool, polyester, acrylic, nylon | Sizes: Queen, king, California king | Colors: Heathered gray, dune, charcoal

Best Low-Profile: Floyd The Bed Frame

See at Floydhome.com

Star Qualities

  • The sleek and modern design matches a variety of aesthetics.

  • You have the option to purchase options with more storage.

  • This is relatively affordable for the quality and durability you’re getting.

Red Flags

  • Our tester’s mattress slipped around on this a bit.

  • Space between the headboard and frame can cause pillows to slip.

No matter what setting you’re looking for, this customizable bed frame can help you find the look you’re going for. Choose from birch, walnut, or American oak, and then pair it with white or black hardware depending on your preference. Since there’s a gap between the headboard and frame, we suggest placing a long body pillow in the space to fill it and prevent your other pillows from slipping. We also recommend dusting it frequently as there are a lot of surfaces.

Our tester hired someone who took about an hour to assemble this, but they reported it was fairly straightforward. Made with natural, renewable materials, you’ll literally rest assured that this is a purchase you can feel good about in many ways. Similarly, our tester actually boosted her rating score over time; she bought this frame for full price and “has zero regrets,” appreciating that the bed looks like a showpiece, too.

Material: Birch, walnut, or American oak wood | Sizes: Twin, full/queen, king | Colors: Birch, walnut, or American oak

Best Wood: Tuft & Needle Wood Frame

See at Crateandbarrel.com

See at Tuftandneedle.com

Star Qualities

  • Our tester was easily able to assemble this on their own.

  • The under-bed storage space is useful.

  • The classic design is timeless.

Red Flags

  • Less experienced people may have trouble with the assembly.

At first glance, this may look like every wood bed frame you’ve seen before. But, prepare to be amazed, because this one’s all about the little details. Made with oak or walnut depending upon your personal preference, the solid wood is GREENGUARD Gold Certified for the utmost quality. Translation? It’s been screened for over 10,000 harmful chemical emissions that contribute to poor air quality. We found the clean, modern wood easy to assemble, and it even offers plenty of under-bed storage space. Our tester loves the heft and sturdiness of this frame so much she envisions passing it down to family members.

Material: Oak or walnut | Sizes: Full, queen, king, California king | Colors: Oak, walnut

Best Mid-Century Modern: West Elm Mid-Century Bed

$749 at Westelm.com

Star Qualities

  • This is made from sustainably sourced wood in a Fair Trade-certified facility.

  • The mid-century modern style fits with a variety of aesthetics.

  • You have the option of pairing this with a box frame, but you don’t need one.

Red Flags

  • There isn’t much room for under-bed storage.

This mid-century modern bed frame from West Elm comes with some of the prettiest wood finishes that the brand is known for. If you can make this the focal point of your space, it’s perfectly primed for a chic, sophisticated bedroom vibe that exudes the look of quiet luxury. Given the sustainably sourced wood and large headboard, it’ll make a beautiful statement within a room while still adding the classic warmth and simplicity of a wooden bed frame to any space. Not sure which color you want before making the pricey commitment? West Elm offers you the ability to order swatches for just $10, so we suggest ordering a few and holding them up to your space before placing an order.

Material: Kiln-dried wood | Sizes: Twin, full, queen, king | Colors: Cerused white, acorn, white, pebble

Best Metal: Andover Mills Black Albritton Platform Bed

$105 at Wayfair.com

Star Qualities

  • The frame’s height is high, providing ample room for under-bed storage.

  • The hollow framing makes this light and easy to reposition.

  • We found this to be durable even after multiple reassemblies.

Red Flags

  • The frame is made with a thin metal that may not be durable in the long term.

For a classic metal bed frame with an updated feel, look no further than this Andover Mills option. At less than $250 for a king-sized bed frame, it’s a savvy deal, particularly when you consider that it also comes with nearly a foot of clearance from the floor for ample storage space. This makes it a clever option for those with small spaces.

The standard metal frame has a fashionable twist to it with a geometric headboard and two color options, too. Don’t assume that the low price tag comes with low quality, though — our tester has assembled and reassembled this through two moves. While it’s ended up with a few small scratches, there hasn’t been any other damage or bowing in the middle. Over long-term testing, PEOPLE was impressed with its quality in light of how cheap it is compared to other bed frames.

Material: Metal | Sizes: Twin, full, queen, king | Colors: Black, white

Best Canopy: Celita Metal Canopy Bed

$330 at Wayfair.com

Star Qualities

  • The unique design is aesthetically appealing.

  • We love the modern, gold finish.

  • Any tools needed for assembly are included in the package.

Red Flags

  • The largest size available is a queen.

  • This is only available in gold.

Fit for a royal yet paired with an affordable price tag your guests won’t believe, we love the chic gilded finish and sleek edges that’ll make you feel like you’re sleeping in a luxe hotel room or — dare we say — castle. While you may want someone to help you with assembly considering some of these pieces are quite long, they’ll include all the tools needed in the box itself. If that’s not enough, you’ll even get a five-year-long warranty in case this doesn’t look the way you hoped it would in your space.

Material: Steel | Sizes: Twin, full, queen | Colors: Gold

Best White: Kempst Bed Frame

$104 at Wayfair.com

Star Qualities

  • This has a unique, vintage-inspired design.

  • We love the affordable price tag.

Red Flags

  • The largest size this comes in is a queen.

  • The weight capacity is not ideal for two people to share this bed.

All it takes to put together this sophisticated, vintage-style bed is a bit of time. In fact, reviewers said it took an absolute maximum of two hours to put together. Kempst is known for its sophisticated designs, and this one is no different. Choose this bed frame and then shop their collection for matching nightstands that will transform your whole bedroom’s vibe. With nearly 1,000 reviews and a 4.7 rating, it’s no secret why this stylish pick is so popular.

Material: Powder-coated metal | Sizes: Twin, full, queen | Colors: Black, white

Best with Storage: Costway Bed with Storage

$510 at Target.com

Star Qualities

  • Nightstands might block the opening of the drawers.

  • The headboard has an adjustable height.

  • The wood slats are designed with noise-free foam to avoid squeaking sounds.

Red Flags

  • This is only available in two sizes.

If you’re looking to pick one bed frame that will serve as a statement piece while also adding storage space and texture in a room, the upholstered bed from Costway will do the trick. Not only does this gorgeous bed look contemporary with a luxurious feel, but it also acts as the focal point of the room with chic, gilded finishes. It catches the eye immediately and allows you to keep the rest of the decor in your room simple. You’d think that with how hefty this looks, it would be difficult to assemble, but one reviewer stated how easily they were able to put it together.

Material: Medium-density fiberboard | Sizes: Full, queen | Colors: White

Best Upholstered: Homfa Modern Upholstered Platform Bed

$300 at Walmart.com

Star Qualities

  • This has a really glamorous look for a shockingly low price.

  • With almost 2,000 reviews, this has a 4.8 rating.

Red Flags

  • If you plan to assemble this yourself, reviewers recommend using your own tools.

An upholstered bed frame has a certain quirky charm that no other style can embody. Made by Homfa, this bed can be purchased in three colors, all of which look perfectly fit for a luxe penthouse on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. What’s more, the tufted details on the headboard are designed to provide durability along with support for comfort if you like to watch movies or read from bed. Elegant and luxurious, it’s definitely an investment, but the style will remain glamorous for decades to come, and reviewers still say it’s a great value for the cost.

What to Know About Bed Frames

Height

As Mallory explains, there are a variety of details to consider when shopping for a bed frame. Considering how the piece will physically fit within the room (and fit with your other furniture) should be number one.

When it comes to height, it’s important to know what you’re looking for in terms of under-the-bed space. Are you looking for a lofty bed with 12 or more inches of height, or do you prefer a low-to-the-ground profile that limits storage under the bed? There are options for both that can fit your style, but this is an important practical factor.

Style

Your bedroom is an important part of yourself. It should be a completely private, relaxing area that is a complete reflection of your style. That’s why it’s so important to take your time choosing a bed frame.

“I find that if it's for the main bedroom, you really need to personalize it as much as possible,” Mallory says. “For bed frames in guest bedrooms, you can play around with other options.” When choosing a style of bed frame, make sure the only person you are trying to please is yourself — after all, that’s all that matters here.

Room Design

Another thing to consider is the bed placement in the room, says Mallory. Asking yourself questions like: “Are we keeping the nightstands or starting from scratch and getting new ones that will match the headboard?” is important when you’re choosing a piece that may or may not clash with said nightstands, for example.

Behind the Scenes

  • Delivery and Assembly: Oftentimes, this can be the more strenuous part of getting a new bed frame, so we wanted to ensure that this part of the process went as smoothly as possible. Our testers paid attention to how seamless the delivery experience was, and how exactly it was delivered. We then recorded how long it took to assemble the bed frame, paying attention to everything from the ease of unboxing to the amount of tools needed for assembly and how many people it took.

  • Durability: While comfort is of course key while both sitting and lying down, we also paid attention to how sturdy the bed frame felt, noting if there was any bowing while laying on it. Of course, we wanted to ensure that our testers felt their mattress had ample support with sturdy and durable slats, too.

  • Quality: Quality was tested in many aspects. For example, we paid attention to how hollow or sturdy the framing felt, and if the legs had to be assembled on or were built into the frame. A good quality frame would sit evenly on the ground with comfort, even with a mattress and person on it. We also wanted to make sure that there wasn’t any creaking or squeaking when anyone moved in or out of the bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How wide is a queen bed frame?

Standard queen dimensions are 60 inches by 80 inches, and most queen bed frames will be two to five inches larger than that. This is a matter of style. Some sideboards are larger than others, and some bed frames have the mattress sit snugly within them while others lift the mattress.

Do you need a box spring with a bed frame?

Whether or not you’ll need a box spring with your bed frame is not a one-size-fits-all answer. To start, it’s important to know what a box spring is — something that supports a mattress and ensures that it doesn’t wear and sag over time. As this video from The Slumber Yard explains, you might want a box spring if you want a higher, firmer mattress or if your bed frame is flimsy.
