The 5 Trends From the 2000s We're Wearing In Honor of The Hills Reboot

Mascara tears not included.

When you think about how people dressed 16 years ago, most likely you sigh with relief that you don't dress like that now. From awkward fits to trends that went terribly wrong, it's nice to keep certain things in the past, where they belong. But you know what they say: What goes around comes around. Fast-forward 16 years, and the trends we thought were things of the past have come back to haunt us (Hi, bucket hats and biking shorts!) Justin Bieber was on to something when he sang Never Say Never. And the same can be said (or sung) about TV and movies.

A handful of shows and big-screen stories from the '90s and early 2000s are getting rebooted, though none of them are as timely as The Hills reboot. The six-season series not only gave us iconic moments (mascara tears, anyone?) that are still frequently meme'd about today, but the show's overall style went from okay to plain weird, really fast. Whether it was the bandage dresses paired with heels that were almost impossible to walk in, trucker hats, giant sunglasses paired with frocks with wide belts, sky-high heels, velour tracksuits, and a whole army of headbands, it's sad to admit that even I partook in some of these looks. And slightly ironic to say that 16 years later, just like with bucket hats and biking shorts, we're still wearing some of them.

Don't fret, though. Even though these early 2000s trends are quite questionable, their 2019 variations are worthwhile. You may even be wearing some as you read this.

So, in honor of The Hills reboot, that starts today on MTV, we've rounded up the five trends that our favorite Los Angeles crew made iconic.

Headbands:

Yes, a perfectly placed band across the crown of your head is a subtle styling trick we're taking from the cast of our favorite reality show. But headbands have come a long way from your grade school and The Hills days. Now, instead of sporting wide, flat versions, we're all about puffy, velvet ones that make any outfit summer-ready.

Wide Belts:

Since we spotted it on The Hills, this tricky trend has popped up and disappeared over the years. Instead of wearing wide belts over frilly frocks or tanks, we're all about cinching our oversize blazers for a cool fit, or over sweater dresses, a la J.W.Anderson.

Pearl Jewelry:

When it comes to classic jewelry, pearls are at the top of the list. Since the single pearl necklace Lauren Conrad used to wear, our oceanic gems of choice have gotten an upgrade. Now we pair them with colorful beads, stack them up with our other necklaces, or go for an all-out pearl look with our other pearl jewelry.

Tracksuits:

The first season of The Hills was filled with velour tracksuits, and even though 13 years have passed, we're wearing them once again. Though that sentence may read like a cruel, cruel joke, it is the truth. But on the bright side, we've learned from past, poor styling choices, and instead of wearing them with UGGs and layered tank tops, now we style them with cool kicks, graphic tees, and even blazers.

Capris:

Ah, yes, the pants that are too long to be shorts and too short to be long pants. These bottoms are just as awkward as their description. However, it's 2019, and we think we've finally deciphered how to wear them. Instead of wearing them with skyrocketing stilettos and awkwardly long tees, now we wear them with oversize blazers, strappy sandals, and a cute white top or graphic tee.
