7 events for this weekend: Giraffes, bees and sharks

Jun. 21—Fun fact, giraffes have seven cervical vertebrae, the same amount as humans. The ABQ BioPark Zoo is hosting an event on the longest day of the year in honor of these long-necked wonders. Or check out one of these other solstice weekend selections.

1For the ladies

The 37th annual Women's Distance Festival 5K Run & Walk gets moving at 7 a.m. on Sunday, June 23, with the starting line near the University of New Mexico School of Law/Law Library, 1117 Stanford Drive NE. This is a women-only event, and you can register at abqroadrunners.com or raceentry.com, or in-person the day of the event. Registration is $40-$45. Participants will receive a T-shirt, flowers and chocolate.

2You better bee-lieve

The annual Pollinator Celebration is buzzing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at the Open Space Visitor Center. Learn about native bees, what goes on in a honeybee colony, enjoy music and more at this free event. The visitor center is located at 6500 Coors Blvd. NW.

3Fishy flick

The Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center is hosting a family splash pad and movie night from 5:30-8 p.m. Friday, June 21. Splash around for the first half hour and then enjoy the very apropos "Shark Tale." The event is free with a Department of Senior Affairs membership. The center is located at 501 Elizabeth St. SE.

4Enjoy a tall one

The ABQ BioPark Zoo is hosting Drafts for Giraffes from 6-7 p.m. Friday, June 21, in conjunction with Zoo Music. One dollar from each draft sold will go toward giraffe conservation. Ticket prices run from $4.50-$18, with children 2 and under free, at artsandculture.cabq.gov/zoomusic24. Tickets include admission to Zoo Music and Drafts for Giraffes. The zoo is located at 903 Tenth St. SW.

5Gotta catch them all!

Movies in the Park is coming to the West Bluff Park from 6-10:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22, for a free screening of "Detective Pikachu." Enjoy a performance from Conservation Carnival, play Pokémon card games and more before the movie starts at dusk. The park is located at 2408 Alamogordo Drive NW.

6Got the blues

"Mama Sang the Blues" with this 2024 Sandia Chill Concert featuring Joanie Cere, Hillary Smith, and Zenobia and Friends, from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, June 23. Tickets are $20, plus fees, at canyonbluesandjazz.org, with children 16 and under free with paid adult. The concert is at the Placitas Homestead Village, 221 Highway 165 in Placitas.

7Under the stars

Chaco Culture National Historical Park is hosting a Stargazing Program and Star Party at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22. The event starts with a program in the visitor center amphitheater and then visitors will get to look through telescopes, weather dependent. Visit nps.gov/chcu for more information.
