Allerton Park hosts summer solstice celebration

MONTICELLO, Ill. (WCIA) — This year marks the earliest summer solstice in more than 200 years. But that didn’t stop some from staying out late to enjoy the extra sunlight.

Allerton Park hosted their Summer Solstice Celebration Thursday night. Families came out to enjoy a community bonfire, music and workshops. The park also offered a cash bar and food vendors.

‘Strawberry Moon’ will appear just after summer solstice

Senior Program Coordinator Olivia Bunting said it’s fun to enjoy the latest sunset with friends and families.

“Personally, I really like just sitting around a campfire and talking with friends, family, just kind of relaxing,” Bunting said. “Even after like a hot, busy week, just kind of relaxing as the sun goes down and just enjoying your people. And among other people who enjoy the same thing.”

She said Allerton is planning to return to their Winter Solstice Celebration later this year.
