Amazon has announced when its highly-anticipated, huge budget video game adaptation will make it onto Prime Video. Fallout will debut on the streaming service on 12 April 2024.

Based on the hugely successful RPG franchise first launched by Interplay before being picked up by Bethesda, the live action TV series was first announced in 2020.

It is co-written by Jonathan Nolan (Westworld, The Dark Knight, Interstellar) and Lisa Joy (also Westworld), while Bethesda Softworks' Todd Howard will executive produce.

From what we've seen in leaked set images and the like, his influence is telling as you'd be hard pushed to see many design differences between the show and the last couple of games.

In terms of stars, it certainly has a few.

The main lead is played by Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight, Ant-Man and the Wasp), while the supporting cast includes Yellowjackets' Ella Purnell and Twin Peaks' Kyle  MacLachlan.

The plot hasn't yet been revealed although it's a safe bet that it starts in a vault with at least one survivor emerging into a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles. Certainly, the set photos that have leaked so far show the inside of the vault, while some of the character design hints at least one ghoul character.

Ghouls are mutated humans that look like zombies due to radiation poisoning, but can have the same intelligence and personality as anyone else. This makes the smarter ones targets for bigotry, which is often an underlying theme in the games.

Amazon Prime Video will hope that Fallout Season 1 is a big success, both critically and in number of viewers. Its other big series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power didn't exactly set the world alight last year, although it has been renewed for a second series.

We imagine, therefore, that there will be more Fallout too, although whether it will follow on from this first run of what looks to be eight episodes is yet to be seen.

We'll bring you more information on the sci-fi TV show as we get it.
