Ariana Grande Explained Why She Changed the Name of Her Song "Pete"

“Music lasts forever.”

Ariana Grande’s newest album, Sweetener, is set to drop on August 17. But even though the release date is nigh, she's still making tweaks to it — her latest update to the album involves a much-discussed little number formerly called "Pete," after her fiancé, Pete Davidson.

Ariana recently decided to change the name of "Pete" to the more complete "Pete Davidson," as E! reported, in case there was any miscommunication about who exactly the song was about. On Twitter, Ariana explained the significance behind the change-up after a fan asked her for clarification. “I like the way it looks,” she wrote. “I love his name and I love him. Music lasts forever. It’ll outlive any tattoo, any memory, anything, even myself so I want my love for him and how I feel to be a part of that.”

We'll admit, this is a pretty romantic sentiment. And this isn't the first time Ariana has defended the song "Pete." When news of the title first broke, fans on social media criticized her for the choice. She later responded, "He's my fiancé. This is my album. I'm an honest and emotional artist and human being and if my openness in my work isn't for you, that's OK; I won't be offended."

Clearly, Ariana is in love and ready to defend both her artistic and romantic choices, and rightly so, since she's a grown woman who can make decisions about her own life. (Also, at least the song isn't called “Grandson," which many fans have taken to nicknaming the couple — the official Teen Vogue stance is "Pariana," for the record.)

Plus, long after we’re all gone from this earth, there will be a song called “Pete Davidson” existing wherever music is stored at that point in time (In the sky? In a literal cloud?) to remind us that love, for a brief and shining moment, was real.
