On Trial: Asobu Dog Bowl Bottle

Tester: Brandon Carte, a dog dad in search of the perfect water bottle to take on hikes, car rides, and to the dog park

The Brief: Since adopting my rescue pups, I've cycled through a handful of collapsible bowls and dog-friendly water bottles, and I finally found the one I love. The Asobu Bottle has a 1-liter capacity, a double-insulated interior for keeping the water cold, and a convenient removable dog bowl that attaches to its base.

If your dog(s) are anything like mine, they are obsessed with car rides, hikes, and the dog park. When I take my pups on long outings, it's essential to have some water on hand to keep them hydrated.

The problem with packing water is that my dogs are absolute water hogs, which I guess is fine, because I am, too — especially if I'm hiking on a hot day. So, my significant other and I would end up bringing three bottles and a collapsible dog bowl, which time and time again has proven to be way too much to carry.

But my recent discovery of the Asobu Dog Bowl Bottle — a clever 1-liter bottle that is equipped with a removable dog bowl at its base — quickly proved to solve that problem. Needless to say, carrying one large bottle is a lot easier than lugging around four separate ones.

Asobu thought of everything — even the smallest of details — while designing the dog bowl bottle. The handle is large and comfortable to grasp — even though the bottle weighs 3.75 pounds when it's full. Its lid is grippy and easy to twist for removal. The bowl at the bottom has a rubber underside to prevent it from sliding around while your pup drinks from it. I also appreciate the bottle's wide opening, which makes it easy to add ice cubes and pour water into the bowl without major spillage.

Since the Asobu is double insulated, the water stays cold all day — even if you leave the bottle in a hot car, which is another major plus. It's comfortable for humans to drink out of and comes with a dog-boned shaped carabiner for attaching it to a backpack.

As much as I love the Asobu, it isn't flawless. Although the bottle comes in bright colors, stylish patterns and features a mostly stainless steel construction, the bowl that attaches to its threaded base is made from plastic. While I'm confident the bottle itself can withstand drops, I worry about the bowl getting cracked. Fortunately, Asobu sells replacement bowls for 10 bucks a pop. Plus, the bowls and the bottle are both BPA-free. Technically they are handwash-only, but I tossed them both in the dishwasher, and they came out fine.

Some Amazon reviewers complained about the bottle's large size — it has a 14-inch circumference and is 9 inches tall. But I wouldn't want it to be any smaller. Between me, my significant other, and the two dogs, it's just the right amount of water for keeping us all hydrated on a long hike without being too cumbersome to carry.

I've tried a myriad of different travel pet bottles before settling on the Asobu. I used the TIOVERY after another fellow Husky owner at the dog park recommended it to me. That bottle has a unique silicone leaf-shaped bowl that flips over so your pet can drink out of it. The problem with that bottle was it didn't keep the water cold, and I felt gross sharing the water since my dogs' slobbery tongue would be slurping right where the spout is located.

I didn't have luck with collapsible bowls, either. I used both rubber and fabric ones, but for whatever reason, my dogs just really struggled to comprehend they were water bowls that they could drink from. The Asobu bowl is 4 inches in diameter, making it a good fit for dogs of all shapes and sizes to drink from. It's about 1.25 inches tall and holds 12 ounces of water.

I took the Asobu to the dog park recently, and it was a hit. All the dogs were snagging some water from it, and it was easy for me to carry to the park. And thanks to its detachable design, I could still hang out in the shade and drink some water of my own while the dogs played and rehydrated as needed.

Closing Argument: After collecting a bunch of dog bowls and bottles, I've fallen in love with the Asobu dog bowl bottle. It's stylish, durable, convenient, leakproof, and keeps my water cold all day. Plus, its generous capacity is enough for me, another person, and two dogs to share.
