Beef Alert: Drake Is In His Feelings Over a Music Critic

Anthony Fantano, a YouTuber who describes himself as "the internet's biggest music nerd," rarely has a good word to share about rap superstar Drake. Posting album reviews to his 2.63 million subscribers on the channel TheNeedledrop, Fantano gave Drake's latest project, Honestly, Nevermind, a score of "Not Good" out of 10 back in June. (Here at Esquire, we weren't too fond of it either.) Recently, he even baited Drake by uploading a parody video about him direct-messaging him on Instagram.

Parody became reality on Thursday night, however, when the rap sensation leaked his real DMs to Fantano in an Instagram story. "Your existence is a light 1. And the 1 is cause you are alive," Drake allegedly wrote, mocking Fantano's scoring system for album reviews. "And cause you somehow wifed a Black girl. I’m feeling a light to decent 1 on your existence." It's always a little weird to see celebrities come for their critics in the DMs—especially since it never seems to work out in their favor—but Fantano didn't exactly take the high road from there, posting the screenshots to his own Instagram.

While the music critic didn't respond to Drake directly on Instagram, he had a lot of words for the rap star on Twitter—and in an Instagram Live stream. "Essentially what happened is that for reasons unknown to me, Drake was in his feelings, as he does tend to be," Fantano stated. "That’s his whole thing... it was a bit of a diss. A salty little DM, quite sad and unfortunate." On his live stream, he also defended his videos, saying, "I’m literally just giving my opinions on music."

Fantano didn't move on, however, smugly declaring on Twitter, "That bitch shared the salty ass DM to over 100 million people." He called Drake "obsessed" with him, taking pride in leaving the artist on read like "so many women from the past." Fantano also called Drake's message a subpar insult, because he didn't hire a ghostwriter. Yikes! Be wary, Anthony. Many a man has gone to war with Drake over ghostwriting claims, but none have returned unscathed. Wrapping up his Instagram Live stream, Fantano walked back the ego and stated that at the end of the day, this was all just Internet beef. He reserved "no hard feelings against Drake," admitting, "Drake, for the most part, is an artist who has made... a lot of fantastic hits."

Champagne Papi has yet to respond to Fantano's recent barrage of comments, but if I know Drake, his Instagram DMs are far from the last word we'll hear about this. The rapper once made two diss tracks back to back during a beef with Meek Mill before the Philadelphia rapper could respond once. Plus, I'm pretty sure some of Drake's songs are still about being hung up on Rihanna. The man lives to prove his haters wrong—and Fantano just gave him all the fuel in the world.
