For the first time in four and a half months, Ben Gravy is back in the water. Earlier this year, the YouTuber and novelty wave surfer detached his bicep muscle, necessitating a complete bicep tendon repair surgery. After spending many weeks out of the water recovering, Gravy is finally celebrating a return to the waves.

“There were times during this process that I truly felt like I wasn’t going to make it,” said Gravy in a recent post to his YouTube channel. “When the doctor dropped the hammer on me and said five to six months before I’d be touching the water again, my heart fell out of my chest. I didn’t know what to think. I thought I was going to lose my career. I thought that my entire life was going to change, but we’ve been navigating and we made it to this point.”

The heartfelt message was delivered as Gravy was driving to his favored home break of El Slammo, to scout the surf and recount his recovery journey to the audience. Once there, he was greeted by ankle-high waves that many surfers may turned their nose up at or taken for granted, but Gravy was intent on savoring.

The next day, he finally made it out and got his hair wet for the first time in nearly half a year. After the session, Gravy promised it was just the beginning. “We’re going hard this summer,” he explained. “I’m back in the water. I’m obviously not back 100 percent. It’s going to be a slow roll, but I’m back.”
