Betty Boops cafe now serves Cherry Ridge Airport; Bette Boop Babes Red Hatters stop by

Most restaurant owners are content to have a parking lot. This popular eatery near Honesdale has a runway, too.

Pilots and their passengers and anyone enjoying the view of airplanes coming and going can satisfy their hunger for breakfast or lunch at Betty Boops Airport Cafe at Cherry Ridge Airport. With a name like that, what would be more appropriate than for the Bette Boop Babes Chapter of the Red Hat Society to be among their clientele?

Betty Boops Airport Cafe was opened by Amy Scott on March 1 in what was known as the Cherry Ridge Airport Restaurant.

Delores "Dee" Cullen, whose title among fellow Red Hatters is Queen Mother, said that the Bette Boop Chapter visited the cafe in April to welcome the new owner and enjoy lunch. The local chapter is based in the Hawley-Lakeville area.

Cullen and Vice Queen Judy Maneval presented the owner with pictures of the Red Hat members taken when the chapter celebrated its 15th anniversary a few years back. Scott immediately had the pictures displayed on the wall behind the counter.

In April, the Bette Boop Babes Chapter of the Red Hat Society presented a picture of their group to Amy Scott, the new owner of the former Cherry Ridge Airport Restaurant outside Honesdale, since March 1 being known as the Betty Boops Airport Cafe. "A good day was had by all," Cullen said.

The cafe's name and the Bette Boop Babes recall the classic 1930s animated cartoon character's name. The Red Hat members, however, spell the first name with an "e" (like Bette Johnston, who started the chapter) and the cafe adds an "s" to Boop.

Scott said that her mother opened Betty Boops Restaurant in Gouldsboro in 1995. The name was retired in 2010. Scott, who has been in the restaurant business 30 years, owned Betty's Luncheonette in Elmhurst from 2000 to 2007.

"Bette Boop Babes are definitely a unique group of ladies," Scott said of the Red Hatters, who have since returned for another lunch outing at her cafe.

She said they specialize in breakfast and lunch items, which can be ordered all day. They are open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Customers enjoy the clean and fun atmosphere, she said.

The cafe also provides takeout.

Largely a family affair, working with Scott are her mother Betty, who is the baker; sister Michelle; nephew Anthony, waitstaff; assistant Char (who is not related to Scott), who works on the grill; and multi-taskers, cousin Brandy and niece Shannon.

At Betty Boops Airport Cafe, diners may savor the view through the large picture windows or on the deck, watching the airport activity. Pilots are frequent customers.
