Being an NFL wife may look glamorous, but it has its own challenges, like the hectic schedule and the guaranteed anxiety watching each game. For Brittany Mahomes, wife to Kansas City Chiefs’ star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, it also includes two kids and prioritizing her family’s health.

Both of their children have food allergies, but they recently discovered that their son, Bronze, has a severe peanut allergy. Mahomes started incorporating more allergen-free products into her family’s daily routine, and that’s why she teamed up with OWYN plant-based protein shakes and powders for the holiday season to raise awareness on food allergies. This collaboration will support Food Allergy Research & Education, with Mahomes and the brand matching the donations raised up to $100,000.

Through this partnership, we talked to Mahomes through an email Q&A to learn more about her current favorite allergen-free shakes. Plus, we asked about the snacks in the VIP suite, her family’s go-to weeknight meal and more.

EatingWell: What are your favorite snacks, foods and drinks in the VIP suite you love enjoying with family and friends while watching the game?

Mahomes: We obviously have to be super careful with the food in the suite because peanuts are a fan favorite at football games. We keep the suite nut-free but stock it with lots of good food and drinks! We keep protein shakes in the fridge with lots of water and energy drinks (and a few adult beverages for the 21-plus crowd). They always have chicken tenders, soft pretzels, sweet treats and fruit and veggie trays. Game days are meant to be enjoyed, so I try to make sure there is lots of fun food and drinks for our friends and family while still keeping the food safe for my kids!

EatingWell: Do you have any go-to weeknight dinners that help you manage a busy football season?

Mahomes: My go-to is always a taco night! It’s so easy to throw together and to get the whole family involved in the cooking process. Both Patrick and the kids love it.

EatingWell: Do you have a favorite physical activity to help you feel your best?

Mahomes: If you know me or follow me on Instagram, you know that staying active and being in the gym has been a huge part of my life. I played soccer in college and professionally, but found that as my career was coming to an end, being in the gym was something that I remained super passionate about. I enjoy strength training and lifting weights mostly, but also walks with the kids and the dogs. Staying active is a huge priority for me as a mom because I believe that it helps me to be the best version of myself for my kids, both physically and mentally. Being able to run around with them and teach them to play sports as they grow is so important to me!

EatingWell: While many families may relate to your family’s story regarding food allergies, what inspired you to take the extra step and give back to Food Allergy Research & Education?

Mahomes: As a mom of two children with severe food allergies, I know how confusing it can be to receive a diagnosis and then be sent on your way to make life-altering changes to your family’s food and lifestyle. When I learned about FARE through my partnership with OWYN, I knew I had to find a way to get involved and help amplify their platform. FARE provides incredible resources to families like mine to help navigate every stage of living with food allergies and also funds research and education that are so important in this space. Through the matching donation with OWYN, I hope to be able to support their efforts and increase awareness around such an incredible cause.

EatingWell: Favorite food allergy swaps you’ve recently made in your household?

Mahomes: I love all of OWYN's shakes, but the Cold Brew Protein Shake and Double Shot Protein Coffee Shake flavors are my favorite and keep me going through busy days! Having a protein shake that’s free of the allergens that my kids have to avoid is important to me because I like to supplement my diet with extra protein and it gives me such peace of mind knowing that I can enjoy the shakes around them without having to worry. Sterling accidentally spilled my protein shake on the counter the other day, so it was very reassuring to know that I didn’t have to worry about it getting on her and causing a reaction. Other than swapping my protein shakes, we’ve had to remove all peanut products from the house and swapped to dairy-free milk, and we continue to discover new alternatives. It’s easier to keep these things out of the house entirely just to prevent any accidents or scares.

EatingWell: Travel must-haves or favorite snacks to pack?

Mahomes: I’ve learned that the best way to avoid any issues while traveling is to be prepared and plan ahead. We take the initiative to bring all of our own snacks, which can take a little more effort. We travel with a small cooler to make it easy and keep things fresh! It’s stocked with protein shakes for me for an easy protein boost on the go, plus whole-food snacks for the kids like fruits, veggies, pouches, etc.

EatingWell: What does “eating well” mean to you?

Mahomes: To me, eating well means enjoying nourishing foods with those I love, and for our family that also means ensuring it’s healthy and safe for our kids. I hope to help get this information in the hands of more moms and families navigating life with children with food allergies like us so that they can be confident in their food choices!
