Burger King just brought back their version of a classic favorite to menus nationwide—and though it’s not a new Whopper, it’s still caused a whopper of a stir on social media, with fans calling the returning item “an awesome 9 out of 10” and “maybe even better than the Popeye’s [Crispy Chicken] sandwich!”

You might not know it, but there have been "Chicken Sandwich Wars" going on for awhile now between the major fast food chains. In fact, "Chicken Sandwich Wars" even has it's own Wikipedia page, so you know it's serious! There's been a serious marketing trend in the United States among chains battling to introduce the most-loved chicken sandwich, starting back in 2019 when both Popeye's and Chick-fil-A threw down over which of the chains had been the first to serve fried chicken sandwiches. Since then, over 20 American fast food restaurant chains have added fried chicken sandwiches to menus, including KFC, Wendy's, McDonald's, Sonic, and more—with varying levels of success.

Burger King is also no stranger to the great Chicken Sandwich Wars of the last half-decade: it debuted its "Ch'King Sandwich" back in 2021, featuring hand-breaded chicken sandwiched between two pillowy buns and available in both regular crispy and spicy varieties. The Ch'King Sandwich was discontinued fairly soon after, replaced by Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwiches for the first time around in summer 2022. Now that the Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwich line is returning, it looks like Burger King is making an even more direct bid for the Chicken Sandwich Wars crown—fitting for the "King" of fast food chains!

Burger King's Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwiches are available in 4 versions: Bacon & Swiss, with crispy bacon and creamy Swiss cheese bedecking the crispy chicken breast fillet; Southern BBQ, with southern-spiced BBQ sauce, bacon, caramelized onions and melted cheese flanking its chicken breast; the standard Crispy Chicken Sandwich with a crispy white meat breast fillet topped with savory sauce, lettuce, and tomatoes on a toasted potato bun; and a Spicy Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwich, which throws a triple pepper spicy glaze into the proceedings.

Fans who have already tried the returning crispy chicken hotness are largely raving about BK's latest "back from the vaults" item. "Got this tonight and absolutely loved it," wrote one commenter on Youtuber Peep THIS Out!'s review of the sandwich. Another gushed, "Tried it today for the first time. The Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwich line will be returning this month to Burger King restaurants nationwide. It's unclear whether it will only be available for a limited time, or if it may become a permanent addition to menus pending popularity.
