Two masters of the craft, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, are teaming up to executive produce Cape Fear, a television series set to be a re-imagining of the classic thrillers from Universal.

Nick Antosca, who has previously worked on The Act and A Friend of the Family, will serve as showrunner.

Following a lawyer who is stalked by a man he once helped put in jail, Cape Fear's story originally comes from John D. MacDonald's novel, which was first adapted for the screen by J. Lee Thompson in 1962. The film starred Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and Polly Bergen.

Martin Scorsese directed the remake in 1991 with Robert DeNiro, Nick Nolte and Juliette Lewis starring. It received two Oscar nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Deadline reveals that this re-imagining "examines America's obsession with true crime in the 21st century".

The bidding war for the package has begun, but details of who is interested are currently under wraps.
