Cate Blanchett will not apologize for repeating her outfits on the red carpet. In a new interview, the Oscar-winning actress discussed her tendency to re-wear couture looks to Hollywood events—often updating parts of the pieces to make them feel new again.

“It should be completely unremarkable, the idea of re-wearing (clothes), because we do it in our daily lives,” the actress told Business of Fashion. “We do it out of habit, we do it out of choice, we do it out of necessity.”

She said that not only does she re-wear garments to promote sustainability but also to defy the unspoken rules of red-carpet fashion—one of them being to never step out in a look you’ve been photographed in before.

Earlier this month, Cate attended the TIME Women of the Year Gala, where she was honored, in an Alexandre Vauthier Couture short-sleeved jacket pulled from her closet. And over the years, she has re-worn other designer staples, including the black Loewe suit she debuted at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and a black velvet Maison Margiela gown she debuted at the 2015 Oscars.

She’s also big on repurposing. At the SAG Awards last month, she wore a dress with lace taken from a Giorgio Armani gown she wore to the Golden Globes in 2014 and later to the Cannes Film Festival in 2018.

Some people in the industry have looked down on Cate’s habit to repurpose gowns, saying she’s essentially just creating another outfit, so her choice isn’t that sustainable after all. But Cate disagrees; for her, recycling a piece of a look that brought her joy to make a new one is what fashion should really be about.

“I think that there’s a lot of people like me who are tired of the churn,” Cate said. “But who also want to keep the industry healthy in all its dimensions. There’s a chance here to redefine the notion of luxury. I think that it’s bringing back the cherished love aspect of it.”
