Solar power may be poised to transform the energy market, but it’s been a staple of watchmaking for decades with some of the best watches from brands like G-Shock, Timex, and Fossil adopting the renewable charging method. But Citizen’s Eco-Drive is arguably the most famous example of this, relying on any ambient light, including unnatural light, to recharge the battery. The watch features chronograph subdials that measure up to 60 minutes in 1/5-second increments, and the orange details add a motoring-inspired aesthetic. Plus, the date window adds to its utility. It comes with a brown leather strap that complements the blue face with a stainless steel case that contains a scratch- and impact-resistant mineral crystal. Since the movement is quartz, the watch is highly accurate, and the solar-powered Eco-Drive means you’ll rarely, if ever, have to take a trip to the watch repair shop.
Shoppers said there's a lot to love about this watch, but many appreciated its functionality. “I wanted an accurate, and classy-looking watch for everyday use,” a shopper said. “Just the right size, and the classic looking face and obviously the accurate time were the main reasons [for getting it]… Eco-drive is just amazing. I would definitely purchase another in the future.”
Another shopper said that up close, it's a “nice looking watch,” and added, “I really like this watch. It has a great retro look and is comfortable to wear. The leather band dresses it up a bit and [complements] the watch face well. The band is stiff at first, but breaks in nicely.”
One shopper who's an active solar watch collector went as far as saying that, of their entire collection, this one sticks out the most. “I collect solar watches and Citizens dominate my modest collection," they said. "But even among them, this watch stands out. A perfect balance of sporty and dressy styles, an excellent feel on the wrist, and precision to shame some of the biggest names...I wear it at least once every week and could not be happier about it.”
