How Often to Clean a Flat-Screen TV

A flat-screen TV should be cleaned at least once a week and when dust, dirt, or grime become visible. Keeping a consistent cleaning schedule can help prevent build-up and the need for intensive, deep cleanings.

  1. Turn off the TV. Allow the TV to cool down before cleaning. This will also allow you to see the dust and any fingerprints easier.

  2. Check the owner's manual. Depending on your TV, there can be specific recommendations depending on your TV’s manufacturer. According to Copeland, you can find information like safety precautions, chemicals, and products that should be avoided before cleaning.

  3. Gently use a microfiber cloth to clean the frame, pedestal, and bezel. A duster can also be used to get the harder-to-reach spots like vents and ports.

  4. Wipe the screen using an anti-static microfiber cloth. Start from the top to wipe evenly to get rid of smudges and fingerprints—and be sure to avoid applying too much pressure.

Tip

If dry or damp cloths aren’t cutting it, using a solution made of water and dish soap or water and vinegar might do the trick. Using a spray bottle, lightly dampen a clean microfiber cloth with the diluted soap mixture and wipe the screen.

Just like your TV, TV remotes need your attention, too. Since they’re often touched more than the TV itself (and possibly one of the most frequently used objects in a home), remotes can gather bacteria and build up fast and should be cleaned regularly.

  1. Remove the batteries. If you have a rechargeable TV remote, be mindful of the port and steer clear of excess liquid in the area.

  2. Dampen a clean microfiber cloth. You can use distilled or filtered water, a mixture of dish soap and water, or vinegar and water.

  3. Clean the remote. Gently rub the top and underside of the remote. Similar to cleaning a TV screen, avoid spraying or adding liquid directly onto the remote and make sure the cloth isn’t dripping wet to prevent device malfunctions.

  4. Utilize a cotton swab, toothpick, or compressed air. All of these are perfect for cleaning in-between buttons and grooves on the remote.
