A group of recreational boaters found a staggering amount of cocaine floating in the water off the coast of the Florida Keys.

According to Monroe county sheriff’s department, “the cocaine has an estimated street value of over $1 million and will be seized by the U.S. Border Patrol.”

The load of coke weighed in at around 65 pounds, and was packaged in waterproof (of course) wrapping emblazoned with an eagle. The boaters who found it were tooling around Islamorada, a village of islands in the Florida Keys.

It’s far from the first time cocaine has been found in the sea, and it certainly won’t be the last.

Back in February of 2023, officials intercepted a shipment of 3.5 tons of cocaine worth an estimated $316 million USD.

Just a few weeks ago, divers in Key West, Florida, found what was suspected to be cocaine about 100 feet underwater. A few days prior to that, authorities seized nearly 5,000 pounds in a bust that was worth over $63 million USD at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Florida is a hotspot for cocaine trafficking because of its relative proximity to South America. Given the amount of cocaine that is turned over to authorities, one wonders just how much isn’t.
