Comedian Kumail Nanjiani Rocked a Vintage Rolex GMT Master ‘Root Beer’ During a Stand-Up Set in L.A.

Kumail Nanjiani may light up a room with his humor, but his watch game is dead serious.

The actor-comedian took to the stage alongside a number of comics at The Ice House Comedy Club in Pasadena, California on Wednesday night. During his stand-up set, the Eternals star casually paired a modern blue knit Todd Snyder polo with a decidedly vintage Rolex GMT Master “Root Beer.”

The two-tone GMT watch—ref. 16753—hails from the early 1980s and mostly follows the design ethos of its direct predecessor, the 1675, which debuted in the ’70s. Both feature a 40 mm stainless steel case that’s capped by acrylic crystal, a yellow gold crown and matching gold bezel ring. The dark-brown “nipple” dial includes protruding hour markers alongside Rolex’s signature Mercedes hands and a Cyclops date window at 3 o’clock. All of that is encircled by a striking split-colored brown and gold bezel insert that’s become synonymous with the Root Beer nickname. A stainless steel bracelet with gold center links completes the vintage banger.

Unlike previous generations of the GMT Master, the 16753 is powered by an enhanced caliber 3075 automatic movement that runs at a higher operating frequency of 28,800 vph and is waterproof by up to 100 meters. Rolex also gave this edition a new convenience: a quick-set date that allows you to adjust the display independently of the time-telling hands.

The Root Beers of this era were nicknamed the “Eye of the Tiger” due to their resemblance to the semi-precious stone. They were also called the “Clint Eastwood Rolex.” The Hollywood legend and watch collector was known to wear the timepiece on and off the big screen, showcasing it in films like Firefox and Tightrope.

While the 16735 is no longer produced, you can cop a pre-owned version via Bob’s Watches now for $12,495. The piece sports an aged appearance, plus a “16750” stamp inside the caseback next to confirmation of its Swiss manufacturing. Oh, and if you want to complete the Nanjiani look, the blue knit polo is available now at Todd Snyder for $169.
