Dare to rappel down Beaver Stadium? Centre County United Way fundraiser to return this fall

For the second year, people will have the opportunity to rappel down Beaver Stadium as part of a fundraiser.

“Over The Edge,” a fundraiser for the Centre County United Way, gives those who register for the event and raise $1,500 or more the chance to rappel 110 feet off of the south side of Beaver Stadium. The event is planned for Oct. 8.

Participants can register online and supporters can donate through the event’s fundraising platform. Anyone from the campus and community, as well as Penn State alumni, friends and supporters, are eligible to participate, a release from the United Way states.

Challenges between academic and business units at Penn State will be part of the effort to reach fundraising goals and send representatives from their groups “over the edge.” Community groups will have similar challenges they can participate in.

The event was new at the stadium in 2023. Last year, 54 individuals and 12 teams hit the $1,500 threshold and raised more than more than $64,000 for the Centre County United Way. In the press release, organizers said they’re expecting an even stronger participation this year.

Last year’s event was held in May, after most Penn State students had departed for the semester.

Funds raised will support Penn State’s annual United Way campaign, which contributed more than 40% of the money raised for the Centre County United Way each year.

The United Way gives Centre County residents access to resources and services funded through the nonprofit. The release states more than 53,000 county residents live “fuller, richer, more stable lives because of the University’s support for the Centre County United Way.”

People who have questions about the event can call the Centre County United Way at 814-238-8283. Sponsorship opportunities for the event are available.
