Delighted astronauts embrace after Boeing Starliner’s first crewed journey from Earth

Delighted astronauts embraced crew as they arrived on the International Space Station after Boeing’s new Starliner capsule safely docked on Thursday 6 June.

The rendezvous was achieved despite an earlier loss of several guidance-control jet thrusters, some of them due to a helium propulsion leak, which Nasa and Boeing said should not compromise the mission.

Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner, with veteran astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita “Suni” Williams aboard, arrived at the orbiting platform after a flight of nearly 27 hours following its launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

“That feeling when you’re back on the station,” Nasa’s official X account wrote, sharing footage of the astronauts celebrating their arrival.

The company is in the process of building a gigawatt-scale factory in Kentucky to produce its nickel-hydrogen batteries, an endeavor that’s estimated to cost $264 million. The startup’s nickel-hydrogen technology is based on batteries that were originally used to store power aboard the International Space Station and in satellites, like the Hubble Space Telescope.
