When I’m in need of denim inspiration, Jennifer Lopez is one of the first people I turn to. In the past few months alone, she’s convinced me that my wide-legs actually aren’t wide enough, drawstrings are better than belts, and denim doesn’t have to look pristine to be chic. And after a recent outing with Ben Affleck, there’s a new style on my denim wishlist: Mother’s flare jeans.

Unlike Lopez’s more daring denim looks, these jeans were classic, like something I’d wear year after year. The dark-wash style sat high on her waist while a fitted look through the hips and thighs expanded into a wide, raw-hem flare at the bottom. As Mary Pierson, Madewell’s SVP of Denim Design, recently told me, flares are on-trend and an “instant leg-lengthener” (win-win), so of course, I immediately looked into getting a pair, and it only made sense to turn to the exact brand Lopez was wearing.

According to one person who fell in love with the jeans the moment they put them on, these flares work for everything: They’re “super cute with a tee and sneakers or dressed up with heels,” they explained.

These Twister jeans are my personal favorite. I love the light wash, lower waist, short hem, and wide leg; it’s the perfect combination for summer. But if you prefer a medium wash, the exact style is on sale in limited sizes at Nordstrom for $161. There, fans of the flares say they’re the “most comfortable jeans [they] own” because of their stretchiness, plus they’re “perfect” for petite shoppers because their length hits just above the ankle. That short hem is perfect for showing off a cute pair of shoes, especially in summer as we lean into low-to-the-ground styles like Birkenstocks and flats, which can sometimes get lost below a full-length jean.

For something less wide, consider the Tripper Flood flare jeans, which offer a slim silhouette and a raw hem—just like Lopez’s pair. According to shoppers, these qualify for Mother’s best jeans ever: “They are the best fitting, most comfortable jeans of my entire life,” raved one customer, writing that the material has the perfect weight and amount of stretch. And per another fan, they “fit like a glove,” with another person adding that they’re “extremely flattering for the behind.” But despite that slightly stretchy feel, these don’t actually stretch out, with one person writing that they maintain their shape and fit their body to a T.
