Southerners will be the first to admit that we are purveyors and passers-down of countless curiously named dishes, from Chocolate Delight (also known as "Death By Chocolate") to Funeral Potatoes. However, if you take a deep dive into the r/Old_Recipes subreddit, there are even more hilariously dubbed recipes to be found, including one cake recipe that went fittingly viral: “Divorce Carrot Cake.” We were intrigued, to say the least, along with over 300 other commenters.

The basis of the cake’s name, which is scrawled across a handwritten recipe card posted on the website page dedicated to “old recipes,” does not stem from inducing romantic splits, but rather from transcending them by sheer force of how delicious the cake is. The person who posted the “Divorce Carrot Cake” recipe, which is from the 1970s, wrote: “This was my mom’s recipe. Named so because my dad sheepishly asked me to make it for his birthday, despite the fact they’ve been divorced for over 20 years.”

At its core, this recipe is a rather basic staple for a classic carrot cake, calling for a short-ish list of ingredients. Standouts amongst the makings include raisins and walnuts, which offer texture and crunch, as well as canned crushed pineapple, which gives it sweetness and unparalleled moistness.

Instead of sugar, it opts for honey, which commenters applaud for its depth of flavor and slightly more health-conscious approach. To finish, it calls for using any cream cheese frosting preferred, whether store-bought or homemade (such as our Classic Cream Cheese Frosting), preferably with the addition of lemon juice to cut the sweetness.

Many of the recipe’s commenters (of which there are over 300) who have ended up making Divorce Carrot Cake for themselves give it rave reviews. One commenter says, “This is hands down the best carrot cake recipe in existence. My family never ate carrot cake until my mom found this recipe.” Others added their own tweaks and compliments.

The user who originally posted her mother’s recipe for Divorce Carrot Cake even asserted that, funnily enough, “I’m pretty sure I roped in a boyfriend from making him this cake!” It seems that this retro cake recipe might just be that good.
