Dozens of Officers Gather in Toronto to Give Fallen Police Dog a Hero's Sendoff

The Toronto Police Department is grieving the loss of one of their own after one of their K9s, a German Shepherd named Bingo, was laid to rest. He was sadly killed while assisting in an arrest at only two years old.

The canine hero was the first dog on the service to be killed in the line of duty. He was given a beautiful sendoff thanks to dozens of officers in Toronto, and of course, to his handler and family. Even news channel CP24 covered the heartfelt sendoff.

Our hearts are breaking for Bingo and his family. This hardworking dog had a long life ahead of him, and it was instantly stolen from him.

The police K9 was killed in action in late July as he and his handler responded to a call in a Toronto apartment building. Police arrived "around 8 p.m. Tuesday to arrest a 44-year-old man wanted for second-degree murder," according to CBC News. After the suspect opened fire the department did the same, disarming the man and assisting in his arrest. The suspect went to the hospital, but unfortunately, it was too late for Bingo.

The dog's handler, Sgt. Brandon Smith, was present for the canine's sendoff ceremony, as was his devoted family. When we saw them walking behind the dog's casket, we couldn't help but shed a tear. Bingo's passing is such a tragic loss for the Toronto Police Department, but it's even more devastating for the people who call him their own. Losing a pet is easily one of the hardest things a person can experience in life.

As sad as this occasion may be, it's comforting to see people coming together to honor the brave dog. "Members of the Emergency Task Force, the Motor Squad, and Toronto Dog Services" all joined Sgt. Smith and Bingo's family for the processional.

We think this is a sendoff that the police K9 would love. Thank you for your service, Bingo. You are a very, very good boy.
