Eliza Scanlen Doesn't Recognize the Dial-Up Sound
The blank tone, angry beeping, and whirring static that comprised the epochal dial-up sound will forever haunt kids who lived through the '90s. At least, it will for some '90s babies.
Eliza Scanlen, on the other hand, the Little Women actress who was born on the cusp of the new century in the year 1999, can't quite place it. "Is it, like, from a movie, or is this just a sound that you hear in 1999?" she asks after listening to the traumatizing soundtrack in the latest episode of Vs. The Year. "The first thing that comes to mind is E.T. I don't know why."

On Eyes Wide Shut
Prompted with a photo of Nicole Kidman from one of her most classic movies, which happened to be released in 1999, Scanlen correctly guesses the title of the flick and her costar (Tom Cruise).
"It's been a long time since I've seen Eyes Wide Shut," she says. "But, I am a big fan of Stanley Kubrick. I love 2001 [A Space Odyssey]. And The Shining—The Shining is one of my favorite films."
On Toy Story
When we task her with naming one of Toy Story 2's iconic characters (simply labeled as "the yodeling cowgirl"), Scanlen hits it right on the mark (or should we say bull's-eye?).
"Oh, Jessie," she answers. "When they do that flashback of how Jessie lost her first owner, it got me every time, and it was at an age when I still wasn't comfortable with crying in movies in front of people, so I would hold back every time. But, yeah. That one got me."
