Paper Girls, a new series coming to Prime Video on July 29, is made for fans of 80s young adult adventure stories.

Thanks to its strong sci-fi flavor, it is sure to be compared to Stranger Things, though the Brian K. Vaughn/Cliff Chiang comic book run that the Paper Girls show is adapted from started in 2015, a year before the Duffer Bros. premiered their particular brand of 80s nostalgia on Netflix.

Vaughn told Entertainment Weekly that the inspiration for the story came from his own experience.

“Growing up in the suburbs of Cleveland, there was one year when I was around 12, where all of the paper boys in our neighborhood were suddenly replaced by paper girls," he said. "I just thought it was so badass that these 12-year-old children were going out at 4 a.m. to deliver bad news to adults. It was just so interesting and captivating that they were newspaper delivery kids, sort of a dying breed, and yet they were the first of their kind. I thought, 'This is such an interesting group of young women. They would make a great heart of a story.'”

If you’ve not read the series, fear not–Vaughn and artist Chiang worked with those adapting it for television to streamline the story for the screen. If you have read the series, expect some exciting changes while the core and themes of the main story are preserved.

Says Vaughn, "I think sometimes people read a comic and are like, 'oh this is just storyboards, let's just shoot this.' But comics are [their] own unique medium, and television can do things that we can't."

He added, "If you've never heard of Paper Girls, if you're not familiar with this comic, then the show is still 100 percent accessible and I think you will love it. But if you're a hardcore fan of the comic, it's still going to be extremely surprising to you. With our blessing, they go to some places that we never could as a comic and there are new characters, there are new threats."

What is Paper Girls about?

Paper Girls is a coming-of-age time travel adventure about four 12-year-old girls, Mac, Tiffany, Erin and K. J., who deliver newspapers to a suburban Cleveland town in 1988. The morning after Halloween, they discover a time machine that sends them to 2019, where they encounter their future selves (look for Ali Wong as adult Erin!).

They also learn about an interdimensional conflict between two factions battling over the primary timeline: those that want to preserve the timeline, and those that want to tinker with it at crucial moments in the past to create a better future.
