Agni Tilla and her husband, Janis, have quite the full house with their three kids, Toms (12), Mia (4), and Noa (2), but their family’s home — a 970-square-foot apartment in Barcelona’s Gracia neighborhood — isn’t cluttered or hectic in the slightest.
Agni, who’s a designer and founder of candle company to:from, describes her family home’s style as “colorful minimalism,” and that comes through in every room of the house, including the apartment’s generously sized terrace, which acts as extra living and dining space.
Although the apartment is a rental, Agni explains that they “were lucky to have a flexible landlord who agreed that we can make the space our own and who wasn’t too concerned about what we are doing with the apartment; however as we moved in immediately and our budget was tight we had to be creative from the beginning,” she writes. “One of those was a kitchen that required immediate updating, so for a month we lived without a kitchen.”
The couple also wanted to make the space feel brighter and open up the space, “so we removed all doors in communal areas,” she begins. “We completely renovated the downstairs bathroom and kitchen on a budget, as they were outdated. Janis is pretty handy so we managed to do everything on our own, but some tasks took more than one attempt.”
Although one of Agni’s favorite parts of their home is actually the apartment’s location, near “schools, amazing restaurants, and great community in the heart of Barcelona,” she also loves their spacious terrace, which includes a very cute shed that has played double duty since they built it.
“We started our rent during the pandemic, and I needed space for my small business so I can work from home. We built a little shed on our terrace that we used as a candle-making workshop for a year until I got a proper studio. It’s now our kids’ playhouse and they love it,” she explains.
