Who doesn't love a cheeseburger and fries? But why simply eat your favorite food when you can also wear it? We've praised food-inspired fashion before, and just this week a collection of handmade fascinator-style food hats became the talk of Twitter when writer and author Abi Balingit tweeted about them.

Designer Sheena Stewart sells the hats at her Etsy store BeholderFashions and also showcases them on Instagram. From a large deviled egg and plate of meatloaf and mashed potatoes to biscuits and gravy and dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets, her creations play into the personal and cultural connections to food and nostalgia.

"I think food brings multifaceted joy, universally. It's full of childhood nostalgia, holidays, culture, family and friends, and feels just plain amazing to experience," said Stewart. "Food is a pleasure that is wonderful to the eyes, nose, touch, taste, and even ears!"

Prior to launching Beholder, Stewart studied sculpture but wasn't sure what to do with her degree. She started teaching a bow-making class and later made a bonnet for a friend that aligned with the Gothic Lolita style, which is characterized by cute and whimsical frilly dresses, intricate bonnets, and accessories. The style was a response to social and political issues in 1970s and 1980s Japan, according to the scholar Terasa Younker.

Seeing demand, Stewart began selling the bonnets and eventually experimented with mini hats with food themes. "I learned pretty early in my business to make what I love and I LOVE food," she said.

"For me it was essentially soft sculpture, and I was in my element," she said. "Although 3D is often played with in clothing, shoes, purses, and accessories, I think the best form is the hat."

Now, Stewart sells dozens of different food-shaped pieces, mostly small fascinator-style hats, which, like the Gothic Lolita aesthetic, have a history of being tied to politics and escapism. The hats can also be displayed as desk decorations.

"I hold the hat in the highest regard of fashion, as it has the honor of sitting atop the head," she said. "The head encompasses all we are, and the hat is its crown!"
