What is the ‘giant woman’ TikTok trend all about and where does it come from?

An illusion trend on TikTok has creators coming up with new ways to make people seem like giants on camera, without using any filters or special editing.

It’s known as the “giant woman” TikTok trend and the name is pretty self-explanatory. In it, one person, filmed from a super high perspective so they seem small, is seen offering a prop to someone above them. Then, the angle changes, and the prop is given to a “giant woman.” The prop size will also change in scale, to further emphasize the staged juxtaposition between the two characters.

The trend appears to be inspired by the Cartoon Network show Steven Universe, since it loosely recreates a moment in the episode “Giant Woman” from Season 1.

In the clip, the character Opal says to Steven, “All you want to do is see me turn into—”

“A giant woman,” he replies, looking up as Opal grows bigger.

The audio was later paired with a clip from the song “Genesis” by Grimes, which has now been used in nearly 23,000 TikToks.

Perfecting the trend is all about getting the right camera angles to skew the viewer’s perspective.

The Goddess Boys (@rjchumbley) did this with their take on the giant woman trend by having one of the creators pose with a large high heel. The video was also set to different music than the others, using the track “Ice Dance” from the movie Edward Scissorhands.

The trend itself is pretty lighthearted and even a bit silly, but that’s exactly what so many people seem to love about it. To date, videos tagged with #AGiantWoman have received more than 46 million views, while those under #GiantWomanStevenUniverse are up to 25.7 million.

As the trend continues to build momentum, some TikTokers are even creating how-to videos that show others just how easily they can create their own videos.

In one tutorial, shared by Dani Verdari (@daniverdari), the TikToker incorporates small props and wide camera angles to make things look even more realistic.

Others are putting their own unique twists on the trend, including the TikToker Jorge (@jorgecollects), who decided to give it the Taylor Swift treatment.

“where my swifties at?” Jorge wrote in their post caption.

In the video, Jorge hands over a copy of the album Midnights on vinyl to a “giant woman,” who then appears to hold a teeny-tiny version of it in her hands. In reality, though, it’s the CD version of Midnights, which is naturally much smaller.
